UNITED STATES THEODORE TOBIAS, OF PIERPOINT, SOUTH DAKOTA.
PATENT OFFICE.
SCHOOL SEAT AND DESK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 518,166, dated April 10, 1894.
Application filed January 19, 1893. Serial No. 459,032. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE TOBIAS, of Pierpoint, in the county ofDay and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in School Seats and Desks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvementin school seats and desks; and it consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully described hereinafter, and more especially referred to in the claims.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved desk and seat therefor which shall be capable of adj ustment in the several particulars hereinafter specified so as to be readily adapted for use of large or small pup1 s.
Figure l is a front elevation of my improved seat and desk. Fig. 2 isan end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the seat and sectional View of the desk portion on line 4=4= of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is an end view of the desk and seat showing them adjusted for the use of small pupils.
The foot A, the seat supporting standard B, and the desk standard 0, of each end of the combined desk and seat are formed of a single casting; the said standards being slotted vertically as shown at B',and C, respectively.
. D, designates the vertical end supports for the seats E, and on the respective edgesof these supports are the guide ways F, which fit over-the edges of the standard B upon which latter they are adjustable vertically and the said supports D, are held in the desired vertical adj ustmentby clamping screws G, extending from the latter through the slots B, as shown. The supports D, are con nected by the cross brace H, and projecting vertically from its center is the support I, which latter as well as the supports D, is slotted horizontally near its upper end and projecting into these slots are the trunnions J of the seats E, which latter are thus pivotally supported. The said trunnions are 10 cated rearward from the longitudinal center of the seats while the forward under edge of the latter rest on the brace H. By this ar-.
rangement the weight of the pupil is forward ofthe seats pivots and hence the seat is not liable to tilt backward while being occupied.
K, designates the vertically adjustable desk suppo'rts carrying guides L, on their rear edges which overlap the edges of the standards 0, upon which latter they are vertically adjustable being held in the desired position by clamping screws K, extending from supports K, through slots 0'. The upper ends of the supports are flanged as at M,and adapted to rest thereon is the desk top N, which carries depending guides O, which fit around the said flanges and by this means the desk top may be adjusted horizontally to suit the convenience of the pupil occupying it. Between the supports K, is the usual book shelf P.
On the front vertical edges of the supports K, are located the vertical guides Q, which receive the vertical projections R, on the rear of the seat back S, and by this means a vertical adjustment is afforded the latter. The rear edges of these guides are flanged at Q to form Ways for the desk standards 0. By this construction the desk backv is securely bound to the desk and its supporting standards thus form a very strong and compact structure.
When the desk is adjusted for the use of small pupils as shown in Fig. 5 the desk top N, is moved rearward while the seat back S, is raised thus permitting the seats to be moved rearward on the slotted upper ends of the supports D, and I. A narrow seat is thus provided for the small pupil while the desk top is rearward so as to be easily within his reach.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a desk seat standards in front thereof slotted longitudinally atthe upper ends, angular guides F secured to the vertical edges, seat posts B slotted vertically at B through which clamping screws too extend to the seat standards, the opposite Q secured to the desk, flanges Q formed on edges of said posts being embraced by said said guides to embrace the said standards, guides F, longitudinally slotted support I, and a back adjustable vertically on guides Q, seats E carrying trunnions which bear in said substantially as shown and described.
5 support and standards, and bar 11 sustaining In testimony whereof I affix my signature in 15 said support and also the seats when in a horipresence of two witnesses.
zontal position, substantially as shown and THEODORE TOBIAS. described. Witnesses:
2. The combination of a desk, standards D. E. POTTER,
I0 upon which it is vertically adjustable, guides J. J. COWAN.
