HYDROCARBON-VAPORIZING BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 503,531, dated August 15, 1893.
Application filed January 16, 1392. Serial No. 418,247. (No model.)
To 00% whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ANDREW J. ENGLISH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hydrocarbon Vaporizing Burners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates tohydrocarbon vaporizing burners; its object being to embody in compact form in one and the same apparatus, a hydrocarbon vaporizing burner, a vaporizing retort, an automatic cut-off device, and an auxiliary heater for releasing the automatic cut-off and starting the burner in operation.
To this end my invention consists in the combination with the burner and a vertical supply-pipe the upper portion of which constitutes the retort, of a cut-off valve located in the supply-pipe below the retort-portion, means for operating the same extending to the upper or retort-portion, and an auxiliary burner or heating device attached to said retort in such relation as to act primarily in unseating the cut-off valve and start the supply of liquid for the operation of the burner.
Mechanism embodying my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1, is a side elevation of a burner complete with my invention applied, sectioned through the retort, valve-seat, and auxiliary burner; Fig. 2, a detail perspective view showing the constructive relation of the auxiliary burner to the retort.
Referring now to the drawings, A, designates the burner proper of an ordinary type: B, B, the supply or stand pipe-the upper portion, 13', of which constitutes the retort: G, the supply valve, and, D, the supply pipe proper-these being, except as may be herein particularly specified, of ordinary form and construction.
In applying my invention, an annular curb, a, constituting an independent valve seat is formed on the bottom partition, I), of the stand pipe, B, 13, around the opening in which the valve, 0, seats, and upon said curb a fiat or disk valve, D, is seated, provided with a stem, d, extended centrally through the supply pipe and attached to the top, 0, of the retort portion, 13'. Said top, 0, is preferably dished downward. as shown, for a purpose presently to be explained. At about midwaylof the stand pipe, B, B, is an annular cup, E, extended at one side as at, e, beneath the burner A: and an independent supply pipe, F, provided with a valve, f, connects the cup, E, with the feed pipe, P. hen the parts are out of use and normally cool, the valve D, is firmly closed upon its seat, a, and shuts off all communication between the feed pipe, P, and the stand pipe, 0: and therefore the valve, 0, is not essential, although I prefer to retain the same as a regulating valve. In starting the valve, f, is temporarily opened to admit a small quantity of the liquid hydrocarbon into the cup or auxiliary burner, E. This is ignited and its flame surrounds the upper or retort portion, B, of the stand pipe which is lengthened by expansion, tending to lift the valve, D, from its seat: the part, 13, is also expanded radially which tends to draw the top, a, into a horizontal plane, thereby also tending to lift the valve, D, from its seat. The valve stem (1, being protected by its central position from heat remains relatively cool and unexpanded. The valve, 0, (if used) being opened, the supply of liquid hydrocarbon flows from the feed pipe,P, into the stand pipe, B, B, and, being vaporized in the retort portion, B, by the heat of the parts, the vapor feeds the burner, A, in the usual manner, and the valve, 0, is thereafter useful in regulating the flow of gasoline. While in operation, the flame of the burner, A, furnishes sufficient heat to keep the parts expanded and the valve, D, raised. Upon ceasing to operate, the cooling and contraction of the metallic parts reseat the valve, D, and shut off the liquid supply. The annular cup, E, may be filled with refractory material such as asbestus: and is preferably set off from the stand pipe, B, B, leaving an annular space between as shown: in order that while in operation acurrent of air may flow through the opening to aid combustion, and increase the heat: and when the main burner ceases to operate, the air current adjacent to the retort may assist in rapidly cooling the same.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination of a hydrocarbon heating-burner: a vaporizing retort connected therewith: a feed-pipe connected to said retort: a feed-Valve normally closed and actuated to open by means of heat communicated to the retort: and an auxiliary or starting burner having an independent feed-connection with the supply-pipe and. arranged to operate upon the retort for the actuation of the feed-valve, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a hydrocarbon heating burner, of a vertical vaporizing retort connected therewith; a feed-pipe leading into the retort; an automatic check-valve governing the feed-aperture opened by heat applied to the retort and closed by Withdrawal of heat from retort: an auxiliary or starting burner attached to the retort and communieating independently with the feed-pipe; substantially as set forth.
3. In a hydrocarbon heating burner, the combination of the following elements, namely: (1) a feed-pipe: (2) a vertical stand-pipe rising therefrom: a bu rner-proper carried adjacent to the stand-pipe connected at the top of the latter: (3) a cut-off valve located at the bottom of the stand pipe adapted to be opened by heat applied. to the stand-pipe and closed. by withdrawal of heat therefrom: and (4L) an ANDREW J. ENGLISH.
