(No. 503,302, Patented Aug, 15, 18 93.

M 4 W 7 #4 'W UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE L. WILLIAMS, OF GALT, CANADA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ALEXANDER HUME, OF SAME PLACE.
BOOT OR SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 503,302, dated August 15, 1893. Application filed April 10, 1893- Serial No. 469,70 (No model.) Patented in Canada September 14, 1892, No. 40,345.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. WILLIAMS, a subject of the Queen of England, residing at Galt, in the county of \Vaterloo, Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Boots or Shoes, (for which I have obtained a patent in Canada bearing date September 14, 1892, No. 40,345,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in boots or shoes without seam in crimped front, in which the uppers are so constructed as to leave no possible opening or entrance for water, sand or other foreign substance, and are suitable to be worn by soldiers, sailors, engineers, firemen, railroad men, watermen, molders, farmers, and men in callings requiring such protection for the feet.
My improved boot or shoe, when on the foot, and laced and fastened, fits perfectly and snugly to the foot, and when unfastened and opened, shows the tongue on the side of the upper, and continuously connected to the same, thus allowing the boot or shoe to be easily drawn on to the foot, yet all parts being perfectly connected, keeps the wearer dry and clean.
A novel feature of my invention is the simplicity of lacing and fastening the same, and which consists of a lace attached to the lower part of the overlap and passing through one or more loops or eyelets is caught to a hook attached to the upper part of the aforesaid overlap, the lace being then securely fastened to the fastener on the upper back part of the outer side of the boot or shoe. More eyelets or hooks may be used to suit higher boots.
A most important element and special feature in this invention, is the manner in which the lace draws from, and upon the overlap by pulling it constantly in an upward direction, which pulling, keeps the overlap, constantly drawn tightly, thereby preventing any opening coming under said overlap.
The objects of my improvements are, to provide a boot or shoe, with no possible opening for the entrance of Water, sand, 850., and to aiford facilities for the proper, expeditions, and secure method of lacing and fastening the aforesaid boot or shoe. I attain these objects by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is an outer side elevation of the upper of a boot or shoe, showing manner of lacing and fastening. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the detached metallic fastener, enlarged. Fig. 3 is a plan of the fastener, and Fig. 4. is a plan of the top of boot, showing outer side overlap partially opened to show the attached bellows tongue.
Similar letters and figures of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings A represents the upper of a boot or shoe with an outer side overlap B. This overlap and the bellows tongue B being continuously connected with the upper prevents any water or foreign substance from entering into-the boot or shoe. This bellows tongue is attached to said outer side overlap B, from 5 to 6, from 6 to 7 and from 7 t0 8, thus leaving the top open for expansion. The lace O, is attached to the overlap at D, and passes through the loop or eyelet E, thence through the loop or eyelet F, to the lace hook H, passing through the same and then carried to the fastener I, which is provided with a projecting pin J, preferably bent or curved, to enter in and through one of the series of apertures O, of the said lace; the end of the lace is then adjusted between the fastener and its partially detached and projecting vertical bar K, thereby preventing the lace from becoming detached from the said pin .I. The inner and outer bars or frame of fastener allows the same to be attached by means of thread or otherwise to position on the boot.
The framework of this fastener may be applied to theinner part of boot or shoe, allowing only the pin J, and bar K, to protrude and be seen on the outer side of boot or shoe.
This metallic fastener may also be applied to other articles of leather-ware.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination in a boot or shoe with outer side overlap and continuously attached and set forth.
GEORGE L. WILLIAMS. Witnesses:
