I 3&3 1/19 attoznm l UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMAN I-I. BIERBAU M, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
DEVICE FOR OPERATING CAR-BRAKES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 503,118, dated August 15, 1893.
Application filed April 26, 1893.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN H. BIERBAUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county ofMontgomery and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Devices for Operating Oar- Brakes; and I do declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters and numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvement in a device for operating car-brakes, the several features of which will be fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of my invention is to operate the brakes effectually, and place the brakeman in such a position, that there is less liability to be thrown from the cars while handling the brakes. Y
The object is accomplished by the device shown in the accompanying illustration, in which, a side view of the device is shown with a portion cut away, as attached to a car-box.
The letters and numerals of reference in the one view, designate the several parts of the device.
At L is shown the end of a car-body, and on the top of which is attached the device for operating the brakes, the same being shown in position as when the brakes are tightened.
K is the rear standard, the opposite being identical in form, and on these is pivoted the part A,the spindles having bearings therein. This part has on its outer surface the groove 5 to hold the top end of the chain 0, which is fastened to a lug at the top, by the eyebolt 4. On the side of this part and integral thereof is the segmental ratchet wheel 6. In the rear end of this part shown by the side being cut away is the mortise to receive the end of the lever B. In this lever is the slot 1 to embrace the pin 2.
At 3 is shown the side of the slot, which when the lever is partially withdrawn, the same can fall back at a right angle to its former position. When the brake is not on, this lever would be brought to a vertical position,
and by raising the same slightly in the mortise the same may drop into a horizontal po- Serlal No. 471,911. (No model.)
the chain and rod connections with the brake are tightened. On the inner end of said lever is the turned-up portion 7, under which the toe of the operator is placed to raise the lever and thereby release the ratchet and consequently the brakes. The chains 0 and E are connected by two rods, which are united by the open nut F, the same having a righthanded screw thread on one end, and on the other a reverse thread, to shorten or lengthen the connections. Chain E is connected to rod I, and to the rear end of which is attached the usual form of brake lever. The forked part J engages the end of said lever by means of a bolt. The grooved pulley G is held in ears H bolted to the lower corner of the car body.
M is a support for the rear end of the rod, but not an essential part of the device.
The operation is thus. The lever, when placed down in the mortise of the operative part, stands in a vertical position, the brakes being free; the lever is grasped and drawn backward until the brakes engage the wheels, and the pawl-lever secures the brakes in position until released. To release the brakes, raise the pawl-lever and they are free. The device is applied to the usual form of carbrake, to which it is adapted without modification. 1
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a device for operating car-brakes the combination of the standards or frame K with suitable bearings, the operating part A with groove mortise and segmental ratchet, the
movable slotted hand-lever B, the pawl-lever 5 D, to engage said ratchet with suitable connec- HERMAN H. BIERBAUM.
