APPARATUS FOR DISTRIBUTING ADVERTISEMENTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 502,396, dated August 1, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERIC B. COCHRAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Distributing Advertisements, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to apparatus for the gratuitous distribution of advertisements which, in connection with information of permanent VZLIIIIGyELIO bound in pamphlet form. By inserting the advertisements with information of general value, the preservation of the pamphlets and the reading of the advertisements are insured.
The object of my invention is to provide mechanism by which these pamphlets may be distributed one by one in such manner that while one pamphlet may be obtained readily, the time required to secure more than one will substantially remove the temptation to take two or more of them.
To this end my invention consists in a case for holding the pamphlets and mechanism for ejecting them from said case one by one, substantially as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side sectional elevation of my improved mechanism. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view thereof and Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the lower part of the apparatus showing the parts in a different position.
Similar letters of reference are employed to designate corresponding parts in all the views.
In said drawings A designates a case of any suitable shape and size adapted to contain the pamphlets and distributing mechanism. The front of the case A may be provided with a panel of glass or other material,which may be suitably lettered to attract attention to the device. The case A is preferably provided with a hinged cover or top a, and contains a compartment A in which the pamphlets B are placed, preferably under a weight C, which serves to hold them down firmly on the slotted platform D, at the bottom of the compartment A. At the front of the case, on
a level with the platform D, is placed a shelf E, and the front of the case is cut away just above the shelf so as to form an opening a, which is slightly longer than the pamphlets B, and is just high enough to permit one painphlet to be readily pushed through from the platform D to the shelf E, as hereinafter described.
WVithin the lower part of the box or casing A, and below the platform D, is a sliding cross head F rigidly secured to the rods G which slide in suitable bearings d, d, and, projecting through the front of the case, are there secured to the handle 9. Lugs f, f, secured to the cross head F, serve to support the pivot f and the tilting fingers H mounted thereon. The fingers H swing freely on the pivot f from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 3. They are preferably of the shape shown in the drawings. That is to say they are provided with a straight front face, which normally extends slighly above the platform D, and with a rear extension which serves as a weight tending to hold the fingers against the stop f and thereby nor mally maintaining the front face of the fingers in avertical position. The fingers H are arranged so that they will be carried back and forth in the slots d of the platform D by reciprocating the cross head F. To the cross head F is secured an arm I, which may be an integral part thereof or which may be secured thereto by screws. An arm or lug J is also secured to the platform D, and a coil spring K is fastened at one end to the arm I, and at the other to the arm J, the tension of said spring thus tending to hold the cross head F at the rear of the platform, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. It is obvious of course that the arm J may be dispensed with, and that end of the spring K connected directly with any stationary part of the apparatus.
The operation of the device is as follows: The pamphlets or other articles to be distributed are placed in the compartment A, as shown in the drawings, and a weight O is placed on the top of the pile. If now the han dle g be drawn out, the fingers H will be pulled forward through the slots (7., and the upper edges thereof which project above the platform will engage with the under pamphletof the pile, and it will be drawn forward partially through the opening a upon the plat form E, whence it may be readily removed. As soon as the pamphlet has been removed, the pile will descend until the next one rests on the platform D, as shown in Fig. 3, and the pressure thereby exerted on the upper rounded surface of the fingers H will swing their upper ends forward until no part of the fingers projects above the platform D, and upon releasing the handle g, the fingers will be carried back toward the rear of the pile of pamphlets under the action of the spring/K. As soon as the fingers are carried clear of the pamphlets, the Weight of their lower rear extensions will cause them to swing into the position shown in Fig. 1, ready to engage with and eject the next pamphlet in the pile in the manner above described.
It is obvious of course that many modifications may be made in. the construction of my improved device. For instance, one finger H may be employed in some cases instead of two, and the size and shape of the various combination of the inclosing case having the compartment A, a slotted platform located below the same, a cross head arranged to reciprocate beneath the platform, a handle outside the casingand secured to said cross-head, a retraotile spring connected with the cross head, and the finger or fingers H pivotally mounted in and supported by said cross-head, and normally projecting above the platform, substantially as shown and described.
