Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC LOSSIEL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVED LUBRICATING COMPOUND.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 50,015, dated September 19, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC LOSSIEL, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented a new Lubricating Compound and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My new lubricating compound consists of water, soap, Irish moss, and soda-ash or other equivalent alkali, combined in the proportions substantially as described hereinafter.
I take forty gallons of water and place in. it about five and a half pounds of soda-ash or other equivalent alkali, a pound and a half of soap, and about half a pound of Irish moss, the latter being placed in a bag, so that the fibers of the moss cannot become mixed with the compound. The water is boiled until the soda-ash, soap, and the gelatinous portion of the moss are dissolved. After the mixture has become cool it is readyfor use as a lubricating compound for a variety of purposes; but in most instances I prefer to mixit with a portion of lard-oil or other oil. If the composition has to be used for lubricating wool, for instance, I add to it, when cool, from fifteen to eighteen gallons of the oil, agitating the whole, so as to effect an intimate admixture.
Should the composition be required for lubricating machinery, I increase the quantity of soap from one and a half pounds to about three pounds to forty gallons of water, the quantity of oilused being equal, or about equal, to that of the composition. Any of the ordinary soaps of commerce may be used; but I prefer white castile-soap as being of a purer character than others.
The composition may be used for all lubricating purposes as a cheap and efficient substitute for oil.
1 do not desire to claim the separate use for lubricating purposes of the ingredients herein mentioned; but
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent A lubricating compound consisting of the combination of the ingredients herein described, in the proportions substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ISAAC LOSSIEL.
