NITED STATES PATENT OFFI E.
JOSEPH W. SHEPPARD, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
TROUSERS.
$PEOIFICA'IION forming part of Letters Patent No. 509,693, dated November 28, 1893.
Application filed December 10, 1892. Serial No. 454.773. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. SHEPPARD,
of the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri,.
have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Trousers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention consists of a pair of trousers of double strength and durability, formed by permanently cementing to the interior face of the cloth of the trousers an extra thickness of the same kind of material. The face side of the extra thickness of material is matched to the interior face of the cloth of the trousers and cemented thereto throughout its area so as to form a practicallyintegral double thickness of material.
In the accompaning drawings: Figure I is a view of the trunk portion of a pair of trousers embodying my invention. Fig. II is a detail perspective view. Fig. III isa sectional View. Figs. IV and V are rear elevations.
1 represents an ordinary pair of trousers.
2 represents a piece of cloth or other suitable material of the same pattern and color as the material of the trousers. The face side of the piece 2 is matched to the interior face of the material of the trousers and permanently cemented thereto throughout its area so as to form an integral part thereof, as if the two thicknesses were formed of one woven piece of fabric.
In Figs. I, II and IV I have shown a separate piece of material secured to the inside of the seat of the trousers on each side of the seam, but a single piece, extending across the seam as shown in Fig. V may be used with good results.
By the use of my invention, the trousers are 40 stitch an extra piece of material to the inte- 5o rior face of the cloth of the trousers to provide a patch piece which will be in readiness for use when the trousers wear through, but when the extra piece is merely stitched in place it is necessary to trim the ragged edges of the worn cloth of the trousers and stitch them in place to form a neat patch. In my improvement there are no ragged edges until both of the integral thicknesses are worn through.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an improved article of manufacture, a pair of trousers having an extra thickness of the same kind of material as the cloth of the trousers with its face side matched and permanently cemented throughout its area to the interior face of the outer cloth, so as to form an integral part of the outer cloth, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JOSEPH W. SHEPPARD.
