VIOLIN-BOW.
EPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 508,741, dated November 14, 1893.
Application filed June 22,1893. Serial No. 478,463. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JOHN WM. NoBpnand FREDERICK STREET, citizens of'the United States, and residents of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Violin-Bows, ofwhich the following is a specification.
The object of our invention is to make the hair section of a violin bow in such a form that it can be readily attached to the bow or removed therefrom. This object we attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1, is a side view of our improvedbow. Fig. 2, is a sectional view; and Fig. 3, is a view showing the parts detached.
A is the body of the bow having a nose a and mounted on this body is the usual slide B that can be operated by the screw 0 inthe usual manner. In the nose 0. is a socket a forthe reception of a block (1' secured to one end of the hair D. The opposite end of the hair is secured to the block at adapted to a recess in the slide B, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
The cap piece I) is adapted to undercut Ways in the slide B and block b and the sleeve 0 makes a finish and keeps the hair in place;
the sleeve is slotted so as to allow it to be passed over the hair.
In the present instance we have shown the blocks d, d secured to the strands of hair by perforating the blocks and placing the ends of the hair in, the perforations and gluing them in position and we may force into the perforations small pegs which firmly fasten the hair to the blocks.
Other means of fastening the hair may be used without departing from our invention.
The block 01 is locked to the nose at by a flanged plate E, the flange e of the plate being undercut at the back so that when the block is placed in position and the plate pushed over-the nose and turned in the direction of the arrowbn'to'the nose and when the hair is strung the hair will hold the plate in position and it inturn will hold the block.
Our invention can be applied to any instrument bow without departing from our invention.
We claim as our invention- 1. The combination of the bow, a socket in the nose of said how, the slide B, a recess in said slide, the hair D having blocks secured to each end thereof, one of said blocks adapted to the socket in the nose and the other adapted to the recess in the slide 13, with an undercut plate E adapted to fit upon the nose and overlap the block thus holding it in place, substantially as described.
2. The combination ofthe hair, with blocks d, d, quadrangular in shape and adapted to lit in recesses in the bow, said blocks having pockets in their under side into which the ends of the hair are passed and secured, with means for locking the blocks to the bow, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the body of the bow, a socket in the nose thereof, a slide, a recess in the slide, the hair, blocks d, d secured to the hair, the block d adapted to the socket in the nose, the block cl adapted to the recess in the slide, undercut ways in the slide and in the block d, with a cap piece 1) adapted to the undercut ways thus securing the block to the slide, substantially as described.
