Description
(NoModeL) P. J. HIOKBY & O F. NORRIS.
' COVER FOR MANHOLES. N 50'8,471.
Patented Nov. 14, 1893.
' UNITED STATES PETER J. HIOKEY AND CHARLES PATENT OFFICE;
:F. NoRRIs, OF NEW YoRK, N. Y.
COVERYFVQR IIVIAN'HOLIESI.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 508,471, dated November 14, 1893 Application filed August 8, 1892.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, PETER J. HIoK Y and CHARLES F. NoRRIs, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for Manholes; and we do hereby declare the-following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to an improvement in covers for man-holes or sewer traps,the object being to so construct the same and the means employed for supporting it, that it shall be firm and rigid and capable of withstanding any pressure which may be brought to bear thereon.
A further object is to construct the device in such manner that it cannot be tipped in case a heavy weight or pressure is brought to bear thereon at the periphery.
A further object is to produce means for covering sewer traps or man-holes, which shall be simple in construction and effectual in the performance of their functions.
With these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a perspective view of our improvements. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the cover, on the line ww of Fig. 2.
A represents an annular casing having at its base a laterally projecting annular flange a, adapted to be supported by the masonry constituting the wall of the man-hole. The requisite rigidity of the flange a relatively to the casing A will be insured by means of a series of braces or ribs b. The bottom portion of the interior of the'casing A is prefer-' ably made vertical, as at c, and at the top of said vertical portion, lugs or ears (1 are located and project inwardly, said lugs or cars being arranged at diametrically opposite points. Above. the vertical portion 0 of the interior of the casing, an inclined or beveled seat 6 is made, and at the top of'the seat 6 is a shoulder f, above which a flange 9 projects. The cover B is adapted to enter the casing Serial 110.442.513. (No model.)
- and is made of sufficient length to pass through the same. The cover Bis made with a vertical peripheral face 71. at its bottom adapted to lie parallel with the vertical interior wall 0 of the casing and this vertical peripheral face is provided with notches or recesses 71 through which the lugs or ears (1 'pass. Above the vertical face h of the cover an annular groove j is made for the reception of the lugs or ears (1. A stop (1' is located in the groove j to limit -.the movement of said lugs or ears and prevent the cover from being turned too far. Above the groove j the cover B is made with a beveled or inclined face is, adapted to rest upon the beveled or inclined seat 6 and at the upper end of the beveled or inclined face 7c is a peripheral groove Z adapted to rest on the shoulder f, the top of the cover support on the seat e; that said support or' bearing for the cover extends through the periphery thereof; that the cover is therefore capable of withstanding any pressure which may be brought to bear upon it, and that the top of the cover will be flush with the top of the casing. It will also be seen that as the cover extends through the casing and the vertical peripheral face of the cover is parallel with the interior vertical peripheral wall of the casing, the cover will be effectually prevented from being tipped when an-excessive amount of weight is brought to bear upon it. The device is very simple in construction and effectual in the performance of its functions.
Having fully described our invention, What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters'Pate'nt, is-
In a covering for a man-hole, the combination with a casing having an inclined seat and a vertical wall below said seat, of a cover adapted to pass through said casing and having an inclined peripheral face to rest upon lying flush with the upper edge of the flange g,
