FAGING BUILDINGS. No. 50'74Jl30. Patented Octv.f24, 1893.#
UNITED STATES,V PATENT OFFICE. i
JAMES WALTER GRAHAM, OF OLD FORT, NORTH CAROLINA.vl
FACING BUILDINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 507,430, dated. October 24, 1893.
Application filed July '7, 1892. Serial No. 439,302. (No specimens.) l
To al@ whom it may concern: endsto properly tit the base plates of the main Be 1t known that I, JAMES WALTER'GRA- strips. It is preferred tto cut out the base HAM, of Old Fort', in the county of McDowell plates of the strips B at both ends so the strips 55 and State f North Carolina, have invented B may be worked toward either the right or 5 a new and useful -Improvement in Facing left as desired. l
Buildings, of which the following is a speci- In applying the. improvement to a wall or ficatio'n. I other 'surface a main strip may be first en I My Invention is an improvement in the faccured thereto. In securing the strips to frame 6o mg of the walls of buildings with ashler tilor brick surfaces they may be nailed thereto xo ing, terra cotta, dsc., and the invention has while inseenring them to iron surfaces they for an object to provide a simple, economical may be screwed in\ place or the iron surface and eiclent means whereby to secure the may be furred and the strips A B be nailed thin plates or tiles in place, to which end the or screwed to the furring strips or said strips lnventlon consists in certain novel construc- A B may be secured to such surfaces in any 15 tions and combinations of parts as will .be other suitable Vmanner desired. When the hereinafter described and pointed out in the tirst ashler block is applied then the conclaims. necting strips B may be applied to its oppo- In drawings Figure l shows a part of a site edges and secured, the pointing beads of 7ovl building' wall provided with my improvethe strips B and B forming. the pointing of 'no ments. Fig. 2 is a detail view of'apart of one the blocks and 'so on until the first course is of the horizontal strips. Fig. 3 is a detail completed, when another-main strip A may view of one of the upright strips. Fig. 4 is a be applied and the operation proceed asbeview showing the construction of upright fore. In securing the second and succeeding 75 strips when it is desired .to form a frame to main strips care should be taken not to cause z5 hold the ashler plates. Figs.` 5, 6, 7 and 8 than to bind the blocks tightly, but to leave show different forms of pointing strips. expanding room so'that each main strip may Manifestly theblocks or plates A may for support its ashler course and each course will outside Work be of suitable stone-it may be'y have its expanding room. brown or red or sandstone-ormarble, terra In the described construction the connect-` 3o cotta, or slate may be so employed, while for ing strip is short but in case a supporting insidework suitable ornamental tiles of porframe is desired to hold the blocks over an celain, glass or earthen tiles or suitable stone opening or the like,A the construction shown tiles may be employed.' In describing the in Fig. 4 maybe employed. The space. be- 85 blocks, plates or tiles as ashler I desire to inhind lthe ashler blocks may be fitted with 35 clude therein the substances referred to as mortar or, other suitable filling. In frame well as the stone commonly included in ashstructures it may be preferred `to secure a 1er tiles or plates. lining of fibrous paper against the sheathing In carrying outthe invention I provide the and pack the space behind vthe blocks with 9e main holding strips A and the connecting sawdust or in such structures if preferred the 4g strips B. The strip A is formed with a base paper may be omitted and the space be lled flange C and a! pointing flange D the base` with mortar.
flangey having openings C"for the securing .For cheap outside Work the sections may' nails or screws E and thehange D having the be made of galvanized or other non corrosive pointing bead d at its outer edge. This bead iron while for fine outside work copper may .45 d is made .externally of the shape usually be preferred. In inside decorative work-' 'the given .the pointing of mortar in stone work exposed or pointingportios of the ctioiis while at its inner side it may be given any of may be plated ,or otheiivise finished 'to suit the shapesv shown in Figs. 5 to 8 inclusive. any special case.
Ordinarily the connectingl strips B are For general use any ,suitable non corrosive 5o formed inshort sectionstheir pointing flanges compound metal or alloy may be used. It
being equal to the length of the ashler blocks, will be understood that the invention may be and their base platescut out at one er both employed in forming ceilings, wainscotings,
mantels, dac., and that it-will form a'chea durable substitute for stucco work.
In practice salmon brick or adobe walls may be built andv faced with 4the improvement to present the appearance of solid stone walls.
'lhe construction'of pointing bead shown in Figs. 6 and 8 maybe preferred because by reason of the undercut or recessed formation of the inner sides of said beads they will hold blocks of any edge form. d
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is .I
1. A holding strip for ashler'and the like having a pointer flange and afbase flange the latter being provided with a plrality of slots arranged out of a single line and adapted for the passage of thel fastening nails or screws substantially as set forth. l
2. The combination of the longitudinal and cross strips having each base and .pointer flanges the longitudinal strips being arranged to extend past the joint of the blocksand lap several blocks andthe base flanges of one or both of the strips being cut away at the junct,
ure substantially as set forth. 'f l 3. The improved holding strip for ashler and the like having a flange provided at 'its outer edge with a pointing bead and having such bead projecting jbeyond bothv sides of set forth. v Y
