Description

, L. ALLEN. vADJUSLABLE BAG HOLDING DEVICE. .f
Patented 001L1?, 1393.`
"Inl
mi1 L? UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES L. ALLEN, OF PEWAUKEE', WISCONSIN.
ADJ U STABLE BAG- HOLDING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 506,896,'dated October 17, 1893.
Application filed May 8,1893- Serial No, 473,474. (No model.) 4
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES L. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pewaukee, in the county of Waukesha, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Bag-Holding Devices; and I do hereby declare that .the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to devices for supporting bags of different lengths, and consists of certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts as will be fully set forth hereinafter and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings: Figure l is a side elevation of my device, partly broken away, and Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof, showing the upper part of a bag in place thereon.
A A represent the front legs or standards of the device joined together, at their lower ends, by a suitable brace B, which may be a roller, preferably shouldered as shown at b, to keep said legs a proper distance apart, which legs are pivoted, at top, to the tops of the rear legs C C, as shown at c c, said rear legs being connectedtogether by flat braces D E, on the rear side. From the lower edge of the upper rear brace D, there project a couple of hooks d d each placed adjacent to one of the legs C.
F F represent springs, secured to screweyes e e in the legs A A and terminating in hooks ff.
G is a keeper, preferably of wire, whose ends are bent and driven into the outer side of one of the legs C. H is an arm, pivoted as shown at h, to the inner side of one of the legs A and projecting back past the adjacent leg C between it and said keeper G. This arm is provided, on its under side, with a series of notches g g, adapted for engagement with the lower bent end of the said keeper G.
The operation of my device will be apparent from the foregoing description of its construction, in connection with the accompanying illustration. I represents a bag, the upper end of which is fastened, at the rear, to the hooks d d, and the spring-hooks f f are then fastened to the front of the bag-top, as
shown in Fig. 2, thus opening the bag to its fullest extent. If a long bag is to be used the front and rear legs A A, C C, are brought near together, and if a short bag is to be used, they are spread farther apart, so that, in either case, the bottom of the bag may rest on the ground, between said legs, and then, when the proper adjustment has been secured, the arm H is dropped so that the right notch g will engage with the lower end of the keeper G and keep the device rigid in its adjusted position. By this means, the device can be quickly adjusted to use with bags of any standard or ordinary lengths, and further, the act of separating the legs will serve to stretch open the mouth of the bag to the full extent, and keep it in that position.
When not in use the device can be folded together so as to occupy very small compass, as the arm H can be readily withdrawn from the keeper G, and dropped parallel with the legs, and by reason of the springs in the hooks ff the bags can be quickly and easily attached and detached.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An adjustable bag-holding device comprising two pairs of legs or standards pivoted together at the top, and adapted to fold one pair within the other, the inner pair of legs being united at their upper ends by a cross-brace provided with rigid depending hooks, a keeper attached to one of said pair of legs, a notched arm pivoted to one of the other pair of legs for engagement with said keeper, and a pair of hooks having coiled spring shanks integral therewith loosely connected to the said outer pair of legs at a plane below that of the rigid hooks on the cross-brace of the other pair of legs, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Pewaukee, in the county of Waukesha and State of Wisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES L. ALLEN.
