Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARSHAL L. BABB, OF CAPE ELIZABETH, MAINE.
IMPROVED ROWLOCK.
Specilication forming` part of Letters Patent N0. 50,547, dated October 24, 1865.
-To all whom it may conce/ril..-
Be it known that I, MARSHAL L. BABB, ot' Cape Elizabeth, in the county ot' Cumberland and State ot'Maine7 have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Mode otl Constructing and Attaching Eowlocks or Thole-Pins to Boats and Vessels; and I do hereby declare that the'l'ollowing is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation ofthe saine, reference being had i0 the annexed drawings, making a part of this` specification.
The nature ot' iny invention consists in so constructing the rowlock or thole-pin and the cylinder in which it is inserted in the thwart ofthe boat or vessel that the rowloek or thoiepin may be inserted and removed without trouble, and yet be firmly tiXed.
The rowlock or thole-pin maybe constructed in any of the usual forms; and my improvein wi i l ment consists in constructing the spindle c d, ot' any suitable metal, with an enlarged or bulbous head, d, and having one or more slits or slots, c, in the same longitudinally to a distance suflicient to give` the requisite spring. The spindle c d plays in the cylinder b, which is made shorter than the spindle by the length ot' the bulhous head d. The spindle c d, when it has passed through the cylinder b, expands by force ot' the spring caused by the slit or slots c into the open chamber e, and is thus secured in place.
What I claim as my improvement is-` The slotted and bulbous headed spindle c d, in combination with the cylinder b.
