Description

UNITED STATES PATENT t OFFICE ROBERT POOLE, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNORV TO HIMSELF AND GERMAN H. HUNT, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN OIL-CUPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,352, dated August 8, 1865. t
. To all whom it moy concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT POOLE, of the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain newanduseful Improvements in the Construction of Oil-Oups for Steam-Ent same. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of the cap and ring detached from the bowl ofthe cup.
Similar letters of reference, where they occur in the separate gures, denote like parts in all the drawings.
The ordinary way of putting a cap on an oilcup is by screw-threads out on the two; but I am aware that the caps have been attached bya hinge, and therefore claim neither of these plans.
My invention consists in forming a ring and a portion of the cover in one piece, by casting or soldering, cutting a screw-thread on the ring, and hinging the cap or cover to the permanent portion, wrought on or fastened to the ring, so that iu uniting the cap or cover to the bowl of the cup I use both the screw and the hinge, availin g myself of the advantages of the screw so as to remove the entire cover or capto clean the bowl or reservoir and ot' the hinged lid for conveniently filling the reservoir with oil. r
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention,I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings.
A represents the bodyof an oil-cup, made in any of the usual forms, the lid,`c'ap, or cover B of which is hinged at c, so as to be fully opened. As a fastening` for the lid, cap, or cover I first make a ring, b, to which is cast or otherwise fastened a segment, c, which forms a portion of the cover or cap. On the perimeter of the ring b I out a screw-thread, that screws into a similar thread on the inside ot the bowl or reservoir A, and to the segment or permanent portion c l hinge the lid or cover B, as at a. By this construction ot' oil-cup I y can, for the purposes of cleaning, remove the whole cap or cover, whilefor the purpose of replenishing the reservoir I have only to swing t open the lid B on its hinge. Besides, the oilcups thus constructed, in addition to the facilities of cleansing and filling, have a'very neat appearance.
The usual pipe or tube, d, is placed inside of the bowl, and the oil-cup is furnished With a screw, c, to screw it to its seat. t
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Antoil-cup in which the lid or cover is united to the bowl by a hinge-section and screwring, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein described.
