UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OLIVER S. CONKLIN AND EZRA F. CONKLIN, OF UNDERCLIFF, NEW JERSEY.
HAT-STAN D.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 493,248, dated March 14, 1893.
Application filed September 22, 1892. Serial No. 446,575. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that we, OLIVER S. CONKLIN and EZRA F. CONKLIN, citizens of the United States, residing at Undercliif, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Hat-Stand, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hat stands ordisplay racks and especially to that part of the same located at the contacting ends of the arms or branches, and has for its object, to provide a cushioned bearing surface to obviate injury to hats or bonnets supported thereby and with this object in view the invention consists of the construction and arrangement of the parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawingsz-Fig11re 1 is a perspective View of a rack or stand showing the improved construction in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the supporting end forming the means of contact with the article supported detached and on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a transverse central section of the device shown by Fig. 2.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral l designates a stand or rack of suitable construction, and having on the ends of the arms or projections thereof, supports 2. The said support consists of a disk shaped body, which may be turned from Wood or made in any manner from metal and supported eitherin a horizontal, oblique, or vertical position. The periphery of the said body of the support is grooved obliquely as at 3, to receive a yielding gasket or band 4., constructed of rubber, cork, leather, or any other soft and yielding material, and extends outward from or above the top surface of the body of the support at an oblique angle, to arrange the articles supported thereon as far away as possible from the said body and also providing a projecting yielding rim,.which may slightly overturn through the medium of the article supported on the device. This latter operation provides a frictional contact against the article supported and in a material measure obviates movementof the said article. It will be seen that there are no projecting points or rough surfaces which could be engaged by the bonnet or hat placed upon the support and thereby obviates injury to the said bonnet or hat. By overcoming this objectionable feature a very material advantage is gained as will be obviously apparent, and it will be understood that the support set forth may be readily applied to any form of rack in any manner found desirable.
The device as a whole is simple and effective in its construction and operation and comparatively inexpensive in manufacture.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is l. As an improved article of manufacture, a support for the-purpose named comprising a disk-shaped body-portion provided with a peripheral oblique groove, and a flexible annular band, fitted at one edge in said groove and standing obliquely outward toward its free edge, whereby it extends vertically above the highest point of the disk and laterally beyond the periphery of the same, the free edge of the band being adapted to yield either horizontally or vertically to the pressure of supported articles, substantially as described.
v 2. As an improved article of manufacture, a support for the purpose named, comprising a disk shaped body-portion provided with a peripheral outstanding rim or flange of flexible material whose free edge projects vertically above the plane of the body-portion and laterally beyond the periphery thereof and is capable of yielding vertically and horizontally to the pressure of the supported article, substantially as specified.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as j our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
