GRAIN-PURIFIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,598, dated June 13, 1893.
Application filed July 13,1892.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK. M. SoHELL, of Perry, in the county of Jefierson and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Im provement in Grain-Purifiers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in grain purifiers for cleaning and polishing wheat, corn, rye, oats, barley and other grain and consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

Fig. 4 is a cross section on about line & i of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the feed regulating plug, and Fig. 6 is a detail view of the foot hearing.
In carrying out my invention I provide a suitable frame A in which is supported a cylinder B the lower end of which is conical or tapered to a central discharge spout or tube 0 where the cylinder discharges into the screening box D. At its upper end the cylinder B has the feed hopper E and regulating valve F for controlling the grain supplied, and the top G of the casing which is removably secured by means of the fastenings H, is provided with air openingsi controlled by a perforated sliding damper I which may be adjusted to shut oi the openings 2' entirely or to any extent as may be desired. This damper is held in loops or guides I and is provided with a handle I by which it may be operated. Within the cylinder and depending from its top is the concave J which has its top j formed of or faced with corrugated metal and its sides j faced with rough surfaced rubber. The cleaning head K is fixed to and revolves with the shaft L is formed to fit the concave J and has its top and sides faced with rubber. This material is much preferred for the.purpose, as it is efficient in hulling white caps, mashing soft rottengrains so the latter will be carried off by the suction, and the rubber is durable, inexpensive and may be conveniently replaced when worn out. sides of the cylinder thoroughly separating the grain and putting it in condition to be officiently acted on by the suction presently described. By preference a short section of perforated metal K is provided surrounding and depending from the lower edge of the head K.
The cylinder B is divided below the head K into what for convenience of reference I shall term the upper suction chamber L',the fan chamber M and the lower suction chamber N the chamber M being between the chambers L and N as shown. The fan chamber M has a fan box M separated by a space M from the cylinder B so that the grain can pass outside the box h/ The top M of the box M inclines downward toward the space M and operates to direct thereto any sound grain that may be drawn in by the suction. Suction tubes 0 0 lead respectively up and down from the fan box, said tubes having openings 0 partially covered by guards 0'. The fan P operating in the fan box is carried by the shaft and discharges its blast through an outlet tube p drawing or sucking the dust laden air from chambers L and N. The passage of the air currents is indicated by arrows in Fig. 2 air being sucked upward through tube 0 and downward through the tube 0 and be ingdischarged from the fan chamberP through the outlet pipe 19. Air may also be drawn from the screenings box of the finishing chamber as indicated by arrows and more fully de scribed hereinafter. The space M is divided vertically by partition plates Q which converge toward their upper ends forming tapering passages q. These operate to restrict the flow of grain to the lower chamber so that only a sufficient quantity to be properly treated by the last suction and by the final brushing and polishing devices will be permitted to pass into the chamber N. From the chamberN the grain passes into the chamber Q which may for convenience of reference be termed the finishing chamber. This chamber Q is provided with a cross screen or sieve R and above said sieve with a discharge at S for the grain and below it with a discharge at T for the screenings. Above the screen R I provide 'a brush U fixed to the shaft and arranged to brush against the surface of the screen and thoroughly polish the grain before it is discharged from the finishing chamber, dust, 650., being brushed through the screen.
5 To effectually remove any dust that may remain in the grain until it reaches the finishing chamber I provide a dust pipe V connected at one end with the screening box D below the finishing chamber and at its other end with the suction of the fan preferably to one of the suction tubes as shown so as to draw off the dust, &c., from the finishing chamber. This suction pipe has between its ends an air inlet at V controlled by a valve V to regulate the draft upon the finishing chamber. This valve may also be used as a means to-in a measure, regulate the draft within the main cylinder by furnishing more or less air to the fan box and so controlling the draft thereof upon the upper and lower suction chambers. At its lower end the shaft L which extends through and below the finishing chamber, is stepped in a spring bearing W or it may be a box supported by a 2 5 weighted lever such construction serving to adjust the shaft to hold the head in proper contact with its concave. I also provide an adjustable bearing for the upper end of the shaft. This adjustable bearing may be a 0 spring bearing such as shown for the lower end of the shaft or may be of other suitable construction.
In operation the feed being opened and the grain supplied, it will distribute evenly over 5 the revolving cylinder or head and pass down between the same and its concave the rubber surfaces serving to remove all White caps from the grain and to mash unsound grain and remove all must and dampness, during which part of the operation the grain is subject to the suction which will remove impurities and permit the good grain to pass down between the outside cylinder and fan box, below which the grain is subject to the suc- 4 5 tion operating through the lower suction pipe, and then the grain passes into the finishing chamber and is acted upon by the brush, the grain being distributed thereby over the screen and polished and discharged from the no outlet opening. The suction pipe leading from the finishing box renders the machine absolutely dust proof. The regulating valve F slides on the upright shaft and may be set up or down by a pivoted lever F connected 5 5 by a link F with the valve.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
2. In a grain purifier the combination of the cylinder the fan box therein having its sides separated from the cylinder forming spaces for the passage of the grain, partition plates dividing said space into tapering passages and devices above and below the fan box for treating the grain substantially as set forth.
3. In agrain purifier the combination of the cylinder or casing the concave in the upper part thereof the head operating in said concave, the fan box within said cylinder, upper and lower suction chambers being formed above and below the fan box, the sides of the box being separated from the cylinder forming a passage for the grain, all substantlally as set forth.
t. In a grain purifier the combination with the cylinder and the fan box therein of su ction tubes extended up and down from said fan box and having inlet openings through which to exhaust the air from the upper and lower suction chambers substantially as set forth.
5. The combination substantially as described of the cylinder, having its lower or discharge end tapered or conical, the fan box in said cylinder and separated at its sides therefrom forming a passage for the grain, the yielding surface concave and head operat ng in the cylinder above the fan box, suction tubes extended from the fan box into the suction chamber above and below the same the finishing chamber arranged to receive the grain from the cylinder and provided with a screen or sieve and a revolving brush thereon, and a pipe connecting the screenings box of said finishing chamber with one of the fan suction tubes substantially as set forth.
6. The combination of the cylinder or casing,-fa n chamber, the suction chamber, the tube extending from the fan chamber into the suction chamber and having openings 0 in the latter and a guard 0' partially covering said openings substantially as set forth.
7. The combination of the cylinder or-casing having an inlet for the grain and below said inlet an outlet for such grain, the fan box arranged between said inlet and outlet and separated from the cylinder or casing by an intermediate passage whereby the grain may pass outside the fan box, and tubes or connections whereby the grain is subjected to the action of the exhaust above and below said fan case all substantially as set forth.
8. The combination with the fan box, the suction chamber below the same and the finishing chamber below the suction chamber of the tube extended from the fan box downward through the suctionchamber, having openings within the suction chamber and communicating at its lower end with the finishing chamber substantially as set forth.
9. In a grain purifier the cylinder or casing provided with upper and lower suction chambers and an intermediate fan box connected ing, the suction chamber, the fan, the suction tube leading from the fan to the suction chamher, the screening box, the pipe Vleading 15 fronlsaid box and connecting with the suction tube an air inlet pipe V connecting with the pipe V and a Valve controlling the pipe V substantially as set forth.
