POWER HAMMER.
No. 498,752; Patented May so, `1893.
o uma. WASMINGTON.- D, c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK RYMAN, OF AVALON, PENNSYLVANIA.-
POWER-HAMMER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,752, dated May 25,0,.1893.
Application filed November l17, 1892.
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, FRANK RYMAN, acitizen ofthe United States, residing at Avalon, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oscillating Anvils for Power- Hamrners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved power hammer, and more particularly to that class having an anvil adapted to be oscillated, and consists in certain details of construction and combination of parts as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation partly in section of my improved anvil for power hammers which is constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged front elevation of the die or hammer-block, showing a means of holding the same stationary.
To put my invention into practice I provide a frame 1, of a suitable size and form of construction, and place the same on a foundation 12. Arranged at the front of this frame is an anvil 6, the lower extremity of which is placed in a recess formed in a stationary block 11, and the upper portion formedwith an opening 7, in which an eccentric is made to operate. This eccentric 8 is adapted to give the anvil an oscillating movementand is mounted on a shaft 9, and operated by means ot a hand crank 10. Secured in the top ot this anvil 6, is a die 14 which may be removed and replaced by another to correspond with the desired form of the work. Operating vertically abovethe anvil 6 is a hammer 3, having a removable die 5, at the lower end, and an orifice 2O at the top for thel reception of one end of a lever 2. This 1e-` ver 2, is pivoted in the frame 1, and connected to a suitable power to give the same avertioal movement, whereby the hammer 5o head 3, is elevated and dropped upon the Serial No. 452,317. (No model.)
die 14. An opening 15 formed horizontally through the frame 1, serves to letthe work pass through while being operated upon. By placing two blocks 18 one at either side of the anvil 6, and bearing against lugs 19 formed integral with the frame 1, the saidl anvil is held stationary which is desirable in some classes of work.
' In operation power is applied to the rear end of the lever 2, which gives the hammera vertical movement. The iron or metal after being heated is placed in the die 14, and by means of the crank 10 the anvil'6 is moved sidewise, or oscillated back and forward,
which movement will flatten the iron.
By means of a machine constructed as described, aXle clips for vehicles, and other like fittings, are easily formed, and the apparatus may be used for many other purposes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with a power-hammer, of an anvil having its lower portion supported to permit of lateral movement and its upper portion provided with an opening, and an eccentric working in said opening to impart an oscillating movement to the anvil.
2. The combination, with a vertically movable power-hammer, of an anvil having its lower portion supported to permit of lateral movement and its upper portion provided with an opening, an eccentric working in said opening, and a crank forimpartingmotion to the eccentric wherebyto oscillate the anvil.
3. The combination, with apower-hammer, of an anvil having its lower portion supported to permit 0E lateral movement and its upper portion provided with an opening, an eccentric working in said opening to impart an oscillatory movement to the anvil, and means for holding the anvil stationary with relation to the hammer.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereunto afx my signature this 24th day of September, A. D. 1892.
