MACHINE FOR SHEARING METAL BARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,729, dated May 30, 1893. Application filed February 25, 1892. Serial No. 422,740. (No model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WARD RAYMOND, of Johnstown, in the county of Oambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Machine forShearing Metal Bars, which invention is fully'set forth and illustrated in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
The object of this invention is to provide an apparatus for shearing flanged channelbars, or metal bars of such shape in cross-section as require lateral support when in position for shearing.
The invention will first be described in detail and then particularly set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, shows, in side-elevation, the top shear-blade and supporting stock. Fig. 2 is anend-elevation of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side-elevation of the botton shear-blade and stock, showing also a metal blank in position. Fig. 4 is an endelevation of Fig. 3,1ookingto the left, certain parts being omitted. Fig. 5 is a side-elevation showing the top and bottom blades closed upon a metal blank. Fig. 6 shows the lower shear-blade and stock in plan. Figs. 7 and g S are side-elevations showing a modified construction of top and bottom blades and stocks, for shearing the metal blank when in a position the reverse of that shown in the preceding figures.

The letter A indicates the top shear-blade rigidly secured to the top or movable stock B,
this stock having a reciprocating movement imparted thereto, for shearing purposes, by any suitable means. The lower shear-blade O, is secured to the lower and stationary stock D.
The letter E indicates a metal blank of the form known as a flanged channel-bar. lVith the arrangement shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5, the concaved side of said blank is placed uppermost, its under side fitting the lower blade, 0, and the blank, laterally, being at about the angle shown, say at an angle of forty-five degrees, more or less, to the perpendicular. To resist such lateral thrust and to co-operate with the blade A, I provide a movable shearing-block F, having a shearing edge opposite the member 6. Said block is provided with A pin Gr, having an end-movement, is provided as shown in Figs. 1, 5 and 7. This pin, when thrust inward, constitutesastop for the blank E to abut against, to the length-of the piece to be severed by the blades.
The construction shown in Figs. 7 and 8 is the same as that just described except that the blank E is turned the other side up, and the shearing-blades A, O, are arranged accordingly. The removable shearing-block F, instead of being placed between the vertical webs of the channel-bar E, is placed at one side of the same as shown in Fig.8. The two knives A, C, at their maximum distance apart are of the contour of the shape to be sheared, butare provided with room enough to permit of the sliding of the shape between the same and said knives or blades, together with the movable block F, furnish cutting edges in a vertical plane on all parts of the bar.
From the above description the operation of the machine will now be readily understood. The two knives or blades A, 0, being,
as above stated, of the contour of the bar to be sheared at their maximum distance apartpermissible by the irregular shape of the .bar, said bar may be slid between said blades until in the desired position, the movable block F- being also suitably located. A reciprocating movement is then impartedto the top-stock B carrying the blade A, and said blade caused to descend upon the bar E, the efiect of which descent, in conjunction with the lower blade 0 and block F, is to out said bar at the desired point, and as may be seen all parts of 1.

. Having thus fully described my said invention, I claim- 1. In an apparatus for shearing metal bars, the combination with upper and lower blades set at an angle, the upper blade having a vertical mevement and set at such angle that in reciprocation it strikes the entire contour of the article simultaneously, of a movable block or filler adapted to rest against the side of the article to be sheared adjacent to the shearing point to support the side against the thrust of the reciprocating knife, said block having a cutting edge to oo-act with the reciprocating blade.
2. In an apparatus for shearing metal bars, the combination with upper and lower blades set at an angle, the lower blade supporting the article on all but one side, the upper blade having a vertical movement and set at such angle that in reciprocation it strikes the entire contour of the article simultaneously, of a block or filler adapted to rest against the unsupported side adjacent to the shearing point to support said side against the thrust of the reciprocating knife, said block having 1aflcltting edge to coact with the reciprocating to support the article against lateral thrust.
5. In an apparatus for shearing metal bars, the combination with two blades or knives, set at an angle, one blade having a vertical movement, said blades fitting the bar to be cut, and cutting against each other, of a movable shearing block, shaped to fit a portion of said bar at a point adjacent to the shearing point, to support the article against lateral thrust.
