Description

(No Model.)
O. W. KERSTETER. AUTOMATIC FIRE SPRINKLER.
No. 498,661. I Patented May 30,1893.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES WV. KERSTETER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
AUTOMATIC FIRE-SPRINKLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,661, dated May 30, 1893.
I Application filed May 10, 1892. Serial No. 432,459. (No model.)
provements in Automatic Fire-Sprinklers, of
which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in automatic fire sprinklers of that class in which a valve-disk is held in position to close the outlet or orifices of a nozzle by means of a brace, one side of which is composed of two or more pieces united together with a solder fusible at a low degree of temperature, whereby the valve-disk is released when the heat in the apartment where the sprinkler is situated becomes sufficient to fuse the solder, and the water issuing from the nozzle is discharged against a deflector or distributing plate and sprayed for some distance around.
With these ends in view, myinvention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully pointed out and claimed.
1n the accompanying drawings-Figu re 1 is a side elevation of my improved sprinkler. Fig. 2 is an elevationpartially in section, and Fig. 3 is a plan view.
Like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings, referring to which- A designates a nozzle to the orifice or outlet of which is fitted a valve-disk B. The valve-disk I3 is preferably made cone shape to prevent it from moving in its seat and to always bring the same center to bear upon the nozzle.
The upper end of the nozzle is screwed through a suitable threaded passage or aperture formed in a yoke frame 0 and on the upper end of said yoke is rigidly secured a deflector or distributing plate E.
The valve-disk B is held in position on the nozzle A by means of a brace D which is arranged within the yoke C and has one side composedof two or more pieces united together by low degree fusing solder. The sectional side of the brace D is made longer than the other sides thereof and one end thereof fits into a recess or socket formed in the upper side of the valve-disk B and its other while the other sectional member of said I I brace extends so that if the longer solid side were extended until it intersected the said sectional member a right angled triangle would be formed. The sectional side of the brace is arranged at an angle to avertical line drawn through theaxis of the valve-disk and the 7 bearing between the solid part of the brace and the yoke, as shown; and thus the upper end of said sectional side of the brace bears against a horizontal upper arm of' the solid part D at one side of said vertical line drawn through the axis of the valve-disk and the bearing between the yoke and brace, while the lower end of said sectional side bears directly on the valve-disk; the lower end of the solid part D of the brace having contact with the sectional side of the brace at a point above the bearing between the sectionalside and the valve-disk. As before statedone end of the sectional member of the brace D fits in a socket formed in the valve-disk B and in one of the solid members of said brace is formed a notch or recess into which the upper portion of the yoke C fits and holds the brace firmly in place.
The,operation and advantages of my improvements will be readily understood and appreciated.
Having thus described my improvements,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an automatic fire extinguisher, the
combination with a nozzle provided with a valve-disk, and a yoke attached to the nozzle and carrying a distributor or deflecting plate, of a brace arranged to bear against the yoke in the vertical axial line of the valve-disk and having one side thereof composed of two or more pieces joined by a fusible connection, said sectional side of the brace being arranged in an inclined position to a vertical line drawn through the axis of the valve-disk and the bearing of the brace on the yoke, and the lower end of said sectional side of the brace of the brace at one side of a vertical line drawn through the axis of the valve-disk and [5 the bearing between the upper solid part of the brace and the yoke, and the lower end of said sectional side resting directly upon the valve-disk and having contact, above said valve-disk, with the lower end of the solid 20 part of the brace, substantially as described.
