VAN RBNSBLLAER AOVE GH'; BOX LID SUPPORT.
No. 498,401; 4 Patented May 30,1895.
flibwmsea- I I fwezzZor I fl w 2 3 I W afttarraeysf NITED STATES PATENT OFFIC VAN RENSELLAER MAOVEAGH, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
BOX-LID SU PPO RT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,401, dated May 30, 1893.
7 Application filed August 13, 1892. Serial No. 443,055. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VAN RENSELLAER MAO- VEAGH, of St. Paul, Ramsey county, Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Lid Supports, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices adapted to be attached to the hinged lids of boxes; its object being to provide adjustable means for supporting the lid in various open positions as may be desired for the convenient displaying of the contents of the box, and also to serve as means for indicating the character, quality, and price thereof.
My invention is especially designed for use on cigar boxes.
To this end my invention consists in pro viding a sheet metal clasp adapted to be slipped upon and engage the end of the box lid close to the hinged edge, on the face of the inner member of which is inscribed or stamped any desireddesignating mark or price. To the rear or outer member of the clasp is pivotally secured a button, having preferably four points or members, made also of sheet metal, the lowerone projecting below the lower edge of the clasp. The points or ends of the button are bent outwardly at different angles as may be desired, so that the lid may be open at any desired angle by adjusting the button in such position that the end which is bent to the required angle, shall project below and bear against the side of the box. The box and its contents may then be lifted by the lid,
the button serving as a stop, and supporting the weight of the box and its contents.
My invention further consists in the specific construction and combination hereinafter described and claimed. 7
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure l is an isometrical projection of a cigar box, shown with my improved device attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the clasp. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the button. Fig. 4 is a central cross section of the same on line 00-90 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a central cross section of the same on line y-y of Fig. 3.
In the drawings A represents the box pro- Vided with the hinged lid 2, and B the sheet close to its hinged edge. ing upon the inside of the box lid, and therefore in full view when the lid is opened, is inscribed With a designating mark or price, as indicated in Fig. 2. To the rear member etis pivotally secured a button 0, which is made of sheet metal heavier than that of the clasp, and provided with a plurality of points or ends 5, 6, 7 and 8, outturned at different angles with the body of the button. The button is pivoted near the edge of the clasp so that the depending point projects below the clasp and is brought in contact with the side of the box when the lid is open. By turning the button to bring different pointsinto contact with the box, the device is adjusted to hold the lid at as many diiferent angles.
I claim 1. The combination of the clasp adapted to be placed upon a hinged box lid, and a stop secured to said clasp, so arranged as to bear against the side of the box when the clasp is in place and support the lid in adjusted positions, substantially as described.
2. The combination with the hinged box lid, of the clasp fitted thereto, and an adj ustable stop carried by said clasp, and engaging the side of the box, substantially as described.
3. As an improved article of manufacture, a sheet metal clasp comprising two flat par- The member 3 bear-- allel members, and a button, provided with a plurality of points outturned at different angles, pivoted to one member, substantially as described.
4.. The combination of the clasp engaging the box lid, and the button pivoted thereto, and projecting below the same so as to engage the side of the box and support the lid in open position, substantially as described.
5. As an improved article of manufacture, the sheet metal clasp having a button pivoted on one member thereof, provided with a plurality of points or ends out-turned at different angles, and of such length as to project beyond the clasp, substantially as described.
6. The combination of the sheet metal clasp, one member of which is stamped or imprinted with a designating mark, and the button having a plurality of points or ends out-turned at different angles pivoted upon the other metal clasp fitted upon the end of the box member, substantially as described.
7. The combination with the box having a hinged lid, of the sheet metal clasp engaging the end of said lid near its hinged edge, one member of said clasp being inscribed with a designating mark, and the button pivoted at or near the lower edge of the other member a of said clasp having its points ontturned at different angles and projecting beyond the clasp, substantially as described.
8. As an improved article of manufacture, the clasp B having the member 2 carrying a designating mark, and having a button 0 pivoted to the other member and provided with out-turned points, at different angles therewith.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 30th day of July, 1892.
VAN RENSELLAER MACVEAGH.
In presence of- M. O. WRIGHT, JOHN J. EIHKER.
