Be it known that I, HENRY WILLIAM RIsr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Freight- Car Couplers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a car coupler, showing my improved device for coupling cars partly in section. Fig. 2 is a plan view detached from the coupler. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my improved device.

To construct a device in accordance with my invention I provide a box 1, having an opening formed in the direction of its length, and a slot 10 in the upper face of the same. Secured within this box l, is a bar 2 capable of moving in or out of the box, and limited in said movement by an upwardly projecting pin 9, passing through the slot 10. This bar 2is backed by a spring 4., and provided with an upwardly extending front portion 3 for the purpose of engaging with the coupler link 6.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

Theherein described device for coupling cars, consisting of the box l, hinged beneath the draw head, and adapted to be operated vertically by means of a bent lever 7, a bar 2 having an upwardly extending portion 3 operating in said box, a spring 4 at the back of the said bar, and a means for limiting the movement of the said bar, all arranged and combined for service, substantially as and for the purpose described.
