BOX FOR PRESERVINOG ARTICLES OF FOOD, 840.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 495,162, dated April 1,1, 1893. Application tiled May 18, 1892. Serial No. 433,484'. (No Inodel.)
' more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of this invention is to providea device of the character set forth, which is simple and effective in the construction and operation of the several parts and adapted for the preservation ot` food, cigars, and other materials or other articles and wherein the inside of the door of the same may be readily converted into a cutting board andthe opening for said lid or the lid itself supplied with an air tight packing which will also exclude insects.
In the drawings-Figure l is a perspective view of the improved device. Fig. 2 is a crosssectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the door of the device det-ached showing the packing in connection therewith.
Similar numerals of reference are used to designate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings; the numeral l designates the body of the box which is constructed of tin or other suitable material and provided with adjustable shelves 2 on the inside thereof and having a cushion of rubber or other material inserted in or attached to the body of the box around the opening thereof as at 3. This cushion 3 is held in position by indenting and then bending back at a bevel the edges 4. of the Walls of the box surrounding the opening of the same to form a recess as 5 for the reception of the rubber or other material, which forms the cushion or packing at this point. Stay chains or rods 6 are secured to the side of the box and to a door '7 which is adapted to close against the cushion 3 and thereby provide an airtight joint which will also exclude the entrance of insects into the box. The inside of the door 7 is provided with awooden lining 8 which may be used as a cutting board for bread and other purposes when let down and suspended by the stay chains as shown in Fig. 1. As shown in Fig. 3 the cushion 3 may be applied to the door 7, instead of to the box as hereiubefore set forth and to form a similar function. This form of box may be used for many purposes with con-V venience and facility and the advantages of the same will be-readily understood.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- The combination With a box having its front metallic Wall provided withl a rectangular opening, the inner edge of which isinwardly bent-and folded outwardly upon itself to form a continuous groove or seat, and a rubber packing-strip located in the openingand disposed by-the angle thereof at an angle to the exterior of the box, of a lid hinged at one side of the box and adapted to close against said strip, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afxed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
