UNITED STATES PATENT HERBERT LOUD, OF EVERETT, MASSACHUSETTS.
SNATCH-BLOGK.
l SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 494,873, dated April 4, 1893.
Application tiled December 27, 1892. Serial No, 456,309. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, HERBERT LOUD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Everett, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Snatch-Blocks, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in snatch blocks and it is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the improved snatch block. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section on the line 2-2 in Fig. l, showing the block in elevation. Fig. 3 rcpresents a cross-section on the line 3 3 shown in Fig. 2. Fig. e represents a cross-section on the line ft-et shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 represents a bottom end view of the improved snatch block.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the dierent parts of the drawings.
A represents the metal bow-strap having riveted and journaled to its longer end at a, the block or head B in which the hook C `is riveted and swiveled as usual. The shorter end of the bow strap A is provided with an eye a. to which is hinged the lower end of the link D, the upper end of which is adapted to receive a journal or trunnion b on the free end of the head B, which truunion terminates as a right angled locking lip b adapted to secure the link D to the head B when the block is in use as shown in Figs. l, 2 and 3. I wish to state that I am aware that such means of locking the head and link together is old and I do not claim it as my present invention.
E, E, represent the cheek pieces which are made of sheet metal and molded as shown, each check piece having an outwardly projecting or convex blister E at its middle portion communicating with vertical pockets E, Ef', extending continuously from the upper to the lower edge of the cheek piece and in which the bow strap A is received as fully shown in the drawings.
strap and check pieces are secured together as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
By constructing the cheek pieces as above described great strength and rigidity combined with compactness and lightness are obtained and I am thus able to produce 'an all metal snatch block very strong and light as compared with others now in use.
G represents the sheave as usual loosely journaled on the spindle g, which passes through perforations in the bow strap and cheek pieces, which spindle is preferably provided in one end with a head and having its other end slitted and adapted to be expanded so as to hold it rmly secured to the bow strap and its cheek pieces.
The block is opened for receiving the rope simply by swinging the hook C to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. l, when the link D may be swung outward as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 as is usual in snatch blocks of this construction.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claiml. In asnatch block, a continuous U -shaped metal bow strap, combined with molded sheet metal cheeks secured to said bow strap, each of said cheeks having an outwardly projecting central blister and vertical pockets eX- tending continuously from the top to the bottom edge ot' the cheek piece and adapted to receive the bow strap, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The herein described improved snatch block, consisting of a continuons U-shaped metal bow strap A, having a head B pivoted to its longer end and having a hook C and locking lip b', adapted to be locked to a link D pivoted to the other end of the bow strap, combined with molded sheet metal cheek pieces E, E, secured to said bow strap, each such cheek piece having an outwardly projecting central blister E and vertical pockets E, E extending continuously from the top to the bottom edge of the cheek piece and adapted to receive the bow strap, and a sheave G journaled on a spindle g, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a snatch block, the combination of the IOO U-shaped bow strap A formed of a. single In testimony whereof 1 have signed my piece with the long and short arms a. and cb', name to this specification, in the presence of 1oV with molded sheet metal cheek pieces formed two subscribing witnesses, on this 22d day of with outwardly projecting central blisters E December, A.
