WICK-RAISER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 494,171, dated March 28, 1893.

Application filed August 9, 1888.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY E. SHAEFEE, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Wick-Baisers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the drawings accompanying this specification.

My improvement relates to that class of center-draft lamps in which the wick is raised by a tubular holder, which surrounds the same, and a handle attached to the holder, which handle extends up through the top of the lamp.

The invention consists in the means for connecting the handle with the holder as hereinafter more fully described.

In the drawings-Figure l is a central, vertical section of a center draft-lamp with my improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the holder and the lower part of the handle. Fig. 3 is a cross section of Fig. 2 in line a: Fig. t is a view showing an elevation of the lower end of the handle and a section of the turning sleeve resting thereon. Fig. 5 is-a View similar to Fig. 2, but showing a modification.

A indicates a lamp and B the center draft tube.

C is the wick.

My improvement is as follows:-

D is the tubular holder for raising the wick. It is attached outside the Wick by sharp pointed spurs or other means, and the wick rests between it and the center draft tube.

E is the handle, the same being attached to the Wick holder and extending up through a curb a at the top of the lamp, where it is provided With a small knob or finger piece b, by which it is operated.

c is a small tubular socket on one side of the wick holder near its bottom, and d is a vertical upright stem on the lower end of the handle, that enters the socket.

fis a loose sleeve resting on the stem and turning freely, being held down in place by a washer or cap g, on the upper end of the stem.

h is a small horizontally projecting pin on one side of the sleeve.

To connect the parts the sleeve f is turned so that the pin 7L stands inward. The stem Serial No. 282.381. (No model.)

engaged so that they cannot be accidentally detached. In this condition the holder, with the Wick attached, can be readily moved up or down.

Fig. 5 shows a modification, in which the stem d is provided with a spring f similar to an umbrella spring, which, when the stem is inserted in the socket, springs over the top of the socket and holds the parts connected.

The great advantage of this invention is that the fastening consists simply of a socket on one part and a locking device on the other, which, when connected, holds the parts securely together, and when disconnected consists only of two main parts entire in themselves. The handle, which always remains in the lamp and is not removable, has the locking attachment always in place, being a fixture of the handle, and it is not liable to get mislaid or lost as where it is separate, and the connection is more easily made.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a center draft lamp, the combination of a wick holder provided with a tubular socket, a handle provided with a vertical stem to lit the socket, and a locking attachment connected with the stem forming a permanent attachment to same and adapted to shut over the top of the socket to secure the parts together, as herein shown and described.

2. In a center draft lamp, the combination of a wick holder provided with a tubular socket, a handle provided with avertical stem to tit the socket, and a sleeve fitted to turn on the stem, and having a pin to shut over the top of the socket to secure the parts together, as herein shown and described.
