SATENT ()FFICE.
HENRY S. BACON, OF WVORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE BACON-TYLEE COMPANY, OF BERWICK, MAINE.
INDEX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 483,595, dated October 4, 1892.
Application filed March 22, 1892. Serial No. 42 5,967. (No model.)
zen of the United States, residing at WVorcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Indexes, of which the following is a specification.
The aim of this invention is to produce a new and improved index or reference-book; and to this end the invention consists of the device described and claimed in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of my device with the leaves all turned to the right. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the leaves partly open. Fig.
3 is a similar view with the leaves all turned to the left. Fig. 4 is a central sectional view. Fig. 5 is a plan. Fig. 6 is a section on line 6 6 of Fig. 2. Fig. 7 is a top view, on an enlarged scale, of the means used to hold the leaves in place; and Fig. 8 is a side view of the same, also on an enlarged scale.
My device consists of a new and improved index or book which may be used for quick reference.
The device is intended to be used, primarily, in avertical position, and, if desired, the same may be fastened to the wall of the room.
My device is very handy for use in connection with a telephone for finding the numbers of the subscribers telephones, drc.
Referringnow to the drawings and in detail, A represents the back or frame, fastened to which is the shelf or ledge B and the removable ledge C. Between these two ledges the leaves D are mounted, and it will be noted that the lower shelf projects out considerably more than the upper, so that the leaves may be inclined, as shown, whereby the same will be held open at any desired point. The leaves D may be made of thick pasteboard or of any suitable material, and to the back of each leaf is fastened the binder E. This binder consists of a piece of tin or other suitable material bent, as shown, so as to form a sort of jaw or U-shaped piece, into which the leaf may be easily inserted and removed. The leaves are cut away on their tops and bottoms, as at c, for a purpose hereinafter noted. Passing through the ledges B and C are the pins or pintles F, which are set, as by solder, into the binders E, and thus the pins will form pivots for the leaves, and the leaves will clear the pins by reason of the cut-away portions 0 of the same. Each leaf when in place is thus pivoted at a different point, and thus the edges will lap past each other, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, and on the edges of the leaves may be placed suitable indexes, alphabetical or otherwise, so that the desired reference can be instantly turned to.
It is a very important point mounting the leaves in the binders E, as shown, as the same thus forms a very cheap construction, and, also, the leaves may be removed and changed, as desired, without in the least deranging the device. Thus if the subscribers to the telephones are changed only the leaves may be removed and replaced which are affected by such change.
All the leaves and binders can be easily removed by simply removing the screws that hold the upper ledge C in place.
Above and below the reference-matter on the leaves I leave spaces, as H, which may be rented for advertisements, dsc, and thus the same may be made to go toward maintaining the lists in proper correction. Thus my device forms a very cheap, simple, and effective structure for the purpose intended.
Modifications of the details and arrangements of parts herein shown and described may be made by a skilled mechanic without departing from the scope of my invention, as expressed in the claims.
Having thus fully desoribedmy invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isp 1. In a device of the character described,
the combination of the base having two ledges, the binders E, each consisting of a piece of metal bent to U-shaped form, the leaves the edges of which are inserted Within and held by said binders, and the pins passing through the said ledges into the bindersand forming pivots for the leaves, the leaves being cut away, as at o, to clear the pins, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of the leaves and means for pivoting the same so that the leaves will stand in vertical planes, said leaves being made out of stiff material and having body portions for the subject-matter, indexes on the edges of the same, and advertising spaces above and below the subject-matter spaces, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
