Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM S.- BARNES, OF WATERTOWN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLASES FOR HOLDING NECKTIES AND SHIRT-COLLARS TOGETHER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 48,356. dated .I une 27, 1865.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. BARNES, of Watertown, in the county of Jefferson and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Device or Clasp for Holding Together the Neck-Tie and Collar; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had io the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Va gentlemans or ladys neck tie or scarf in proper place on the collar, and it answers also for a new ornament for both ladies and gent-lemen.
To enable others tomake and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A, Fig. 1, represents the front ot' the clasp, or that part which is intended to be seen, and it is made with its upper part nearly in the form of the Union breast-plate or shield.
B represents the back part of the clasp, or that next the neck of the wearer, and it is also made with its upper portion sufficiently large to afford a suitable bearing on the inside of the collar. A neck or smaller portion, a, connects the two parts A B. The necka is so bent as to afford a spring sufficient to throw the two partsA and B closely together, so that they shall hold tightly anything placed between them, as shown clearly in Fig. 2.
I have represented the clasp as formed of one piece of metal, stamped out and bent up into shape; but they may be made of two materials. For instance, the visible part may be of gold and the inner part of some less valuable metal, and the two joined together in any suitable way.
I propose makin g these clasps of many differrials, and I intend to adorn the plates A with ornamental designs of various descriptions and to set them with precious stones, so that the clasp shall` not only answer a useful purposethat of keeping the neck tie 'or scarf and collar tightly together-but, when worn near the bow t or tie, form a new and beautiful article ot"V ornament.
Neckties, when worn on choker or standup7 collars, vare continually working up on the neck, much to the annoyance of the wearer, unless they are sewed or pinned to the collar, which latter mode of fastening is far inferior to mine, for the reason that the pins will show unless placed too far back to be of much use in keeping the tie in an exact position in front, and besides this they are continually coming out, and it requires as much time, and more, to pin the necktie in place as to adjust my clasps. The clasps are adjustable, and may therefore be moved into or outof' sight, as may suit the pleasure ot' the wearer.
These clasps will greatly facilitate the putcollar, either before or after the same has been placed upon the neck, by my clasp, and there is no liability of accidental derangement ot' either the necktie or ribbon.
t Ido not confine myself to any particularform of clasp orto any particular metal or material of which to make them.
What I claim as my invention, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, as a new article `of manufacture, is-
A clasp for holding the necktie in place on the collar, substantially as described.
