SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 481,215, dated August 23, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE IVATSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Culpepper, in the county of VilcoX and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Plow Attachment, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an attachment for plows.

The objects in view are to provide an attachment to be used in connection with any ordinary plow-as, for instance, a subsoiler, shovel or half -shovel, bull-tongue, sweep, ite-and by the use of such attachment to regulate the depth of the plow and steady the same, whereby it is of lighter draft and more easily handled. A further object in view is to provide for an adjustment whereby the wearin g away of the gage may be compensated for.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claim.

Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a portion of a plow provided with an attachment constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the attachment. Fig. 3 is a detail, in perspective, of the attachment.

In the drawings, 1 designates a plow-beam, from which depends the usual plow-standard, and to the lower end of the same there is secured in position by the usual heel-bolt 3 the plow-shovel el, of any ordinary shape.

The above may constitute the attachment; but I have found by experience that the constant wear to which the edge of the bar i; subjected by sliding over the soil soon renders the bar narrower, and thus its efficiency as a gage is constantly decreasing. I have therefore devised a supplemental member or bar, which may be adjustably attached to the main member or bar and at intervals adj usted, so as to constitute the surface for taking the wear from the bar and, being lower with relation to the same, constantly compensates for any wear that takes place.

8 designates the supplemental bar, which, like the member 5, is curved, and is pivoted at its front end to the member 5 near its front end, as at 9, by means of a pivot-bolt. Near its center the supplemental bar is provided with a laterally-disposed series of bolt-holes lO, which are conoentrically arranged with relation to the bolt 9, and any one of the same may be thrown into alignment with a perforation 10, formed in the main member of bar 5, so that the two bars may be locked together and made rigid by means of a removable bolt 12.

In use the supplemental bar, if employed, is adjusted so that its lower edge is a slight distance below the corresponding edge of the main bar, and thus said supplemental bar takes the wear from the edge of the main bar and preserves the latter intact. As the supplemental bar becomes worn and its lower edge assumes a position nearly flush with the lower edge of the main bar, said supplemental bar is again adjusted, so as to extend at its lower edge below that of the main bar, and such adjustment maybe continued from time to time, as may be found necessary by the wear upon the supplemental bar, until said supplemental bar becomes worn away and can be adjusted no longer. This supplemental bar may then be removed and a new one substituted,or the main bar may be used As before stated, it'will be understood that the main bar may be employed alone but I prefer, for

reasons hereinbefore stated, to employ the attachment or supplemental har in connection therewith.

The many advantages arising from the emi ployment of this attachment will be obvious to those skilled in the cultivation of the soil, and it will be found especially advantageous when employed in connection with coveringshovels for uniformly covering seed and also in the cultivation of land where the same is loamy and the snlosoil sandy, thus requiring shallow cultivation in order to prevent what is commonly termed leaching Having described my invention, what I claim is The herein-described plow attachment, consisting of the main curved bar adapted at its front end for detachable engagement with the GEORGE WATSON. lVitnesses:
