WILLIAM PHILLIPS, OF NORTHVILLE, MICHIGAN.
IRONING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,277, dated August 9, 1892.
Application filed June], 1891- Serial No. 394,712. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM PHILLIPS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Northville, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Ironing-Machines; and Ideclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referencebeinghad to the accompanyingdrawings, which form apart of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in an ironing and polishing machine for laundry purposes, the device being adapted for a Variety of uses, especially as a combination shirt, collar, and cuff ironer and polisher.
It consists of the devices and appliances hereinafter specified and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section. Fig. 3 is an end view of portions of the mechanism, showing the polishing-iron in cross-section. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section illustrating the construction of the polishing-iron. Fig. 5 is a partial side elevation showing one end of the polishing-iron in place. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of portions of the device, showing the adjustabilit-y of the shaft of the roller. Fig. 7 is a detail view of one of the ways, showing the depression intermediate its ends. Fig. 8 shows the main shaft D, provided with a padded roll. Fig. 9 is a detail view in crosssection showing the ironing-board provided with a roller running on one of the ways.
A represents any suitable supporting-frame provided with Ways B B, on which a reciprocatory ironing-board O is located. B B denote the usiial guards located over said ways to protect the garments therefrom.
D denotes one or more friction rollers mounted on a shaft 1), suitably journaled in the frame for reciprocating the ironing-board.
The device is adapted and designed to be operated either by hand or other power, as may be desired. As will be seen, the rollers D have frictional contact with the ironingboard, and a rack-bar C is secured to the lower side of said board, and a gear-wheel D is secured to one of said rollers in position to engage said rack-bar. Thus while said rollers have frictional engagement with the ironingboard the said gear-wheel meshes in the rackbar, furnishing a more positive movement of the ironing-board under all circumstances.
E indicates the polishing-iron, to the extremities of which are adjust-ably secured the squared heads a a, which fit in the vertical guides A and have sliding vertical movement therein.
The polishing-iron is non-rotatable in operation, but is constructed, preferably, so as to be turned when worn. squared heads may be constructed with points a bearing upon the ends of the polishing-iron, a set-screw a allowing the iron to be turned when desired and held in given position. 7
F denotes lever mechanism engaged with the polishing-iron, whereby the said iron may be brought down into firm contact with the articles to be ironed on the ironing-board. I prefer to construct said lever mechanism with two arms ff at its upper end, said arms respectively being engaged with vertical springactuated bars f f connected with the squared heads holding the polishing-iron. The tension of the spring f of the bar may be adjusted by means of a nut J. The spring is preferably located on said bar below the iron, as shown. The spring exerts its tension both upon the lever and the polishing-iron and serves to lift said iron from the ironingboard when pressure upon said lever is released therefrom. The pressure of the lever and spring, it will be seen, is exerted at both extremities of the polishing-iron, bringing the iron square upon the work.
As regards the special construction of the polishing-iron, I prefer to form the same with two heating-compartments E E separated by a partition G denotes the heating device, preferably constructed with arms g g, one extending into each of said compartments, each arm being provided with a controlling-valve g to allow one or both compartments to be heated, as may be desired. The shaft D is adjustable in slotted brackets H 11', secured to the supporting-frame. The brackets are each shown as provided with an adjustable boxing H For this purpose the.
which may be regulated in its position in said bracket by a set-screw H For certain kinds of work, as in ironing collars and cuffs, it is designed, also, to provide for the removal of the friction-rollers D from the shaft D and the substitution therefor of a padded roll I, upon which the polishingiron may have direct contact, the ironingboard being removable from the ways B B and the friction-rollers and gear being removable from the shaft D. By raising the padded roll the polishing-iron may readily be brought into contact therewith when desired. It will be seen that the pressure of the iron upon the work can be readily increased or diminished by means of the lever mechanism, as desired. I prefer, moreover, that the tracks or ways B B should be hollowed or depressed intermediate their extremities, as shown in Fig. 7. Thereby the ironing-board is allowed to descend when moving over that portion of the ways, bringing it into closer contact with the friction-roll. The ironing-board may be reciprocated by the gear alone, if desired. It may also be provided with anti-friction rollers 0, running on the ways, if desired, as illustrated in Fig. 9.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. The combination, with a frame provided with horizontal ways, of an ironing-board mounted in said ways, the latter being provided with depressions between their extremities, a polishing-iron in position over said board, and mechanism for reciprocating said ironing-board, substantially as set forth and described.
2. The combination, with a frame provided with vertical guides, of a movable ironingboard, a polishing-iron in position over said board, squared heads adjustably secured to the ends of said polishing-iron, the said heads being provided with openings and inwardbearing points to receive the extremities of said iron, and securing-screws whereby the iron may be set with any part of its face downward, substantially as set forth and described.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM PHILLIPS. Witnesses:
