Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LAURESTON R. LIVINGSTON, JNO. JAY ROGGEN, AND CALVIN ADAMS, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
FASTENING-LATCI-I.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 4,862, dated November 24, 1846.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that we, LAUREsToN R. Liv- INGsroN, JOHN J AY ROGGEN, and CALVIN ADAMS, of the city of Pittsburgh, county of Allegheny, State of'Pennsylvania, have in? vented a new and useful Improvement in the Manner of Constructing Door-Fasten ers; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same.
We construct our latch (A) in any known form to be operated on either by' a knob or thumb piece or such other manner as may seem best and apply thereto a lever, (B) with an eccentric head (C) which revolves around the screw (D) that fastens the upper end of the keeper (E) to the d'oor. We form the keeper (E) in two parts, one part (F) placed against the door inside of the latch (A) having two hollow projections (G, G) one above and the other below the latch (A), the other part of the keeper has also two hollow projections (H, H) and when the two (E and F) as represented by Fig. 3, are placed together on the door there will be space (L) enough between them for the latch (A) to rise and fall. The
screws (D, D) for fastening the platesr to the door pass through the hollow projections (G G and H, H). The hole (M) in the eccentric head (C) (as represented Figure 4) is suhiciently large to revolve easily varound the tubes formed by the two hollow projections (G and H) so that when the lever is thrown back (as represented by Fig. l) the latch is at liberty, but when for? ward (as represented by Fig. 2) the widest or thickest part of the head is made to come in contact with the upper edge of the latch and effectually prevents it from 'rising'.
We do not claim a lever eccentric revolving on a pin for fastening the latch; but
`What we do claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is#- Combining the lever-eccentric with the upper screw of the keeper, and the latch as herein described.
