I. GASSIDY.
GOMPLEXION STEAMER.
No. 486,081. Patented Nov. 15, 1892.
UNITE 'rA'rEs PATENT FFICE.
ISABEL CASSIDY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMPLEXlON-STEAM ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 486,081, dated November 15, 1892.
Application filed March 12, 1892. Serial No. 424,706. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISABEL OAssIDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Complexion-Steamers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a method of and apparatus for the treatment of the complexion, to improve the same, and to cure or remove skin diseases and blemishes, such as eczema, pimples, freckles, &c.; and said invention consists in subjecting the part that is affected to the action of a medicated vapor consisting of a medication appropriate to the afiection and steam.
The invention consists, further,in the apparatus employed, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In the accompanying drawing the figure shows a longitudinal section of-the apparatus which I employ.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawing by letter, A designates a boiler in which steam may be generated by any suitable heating device; but, as shown, and as I prefer, by a gas-stove B on which it is placed. At its top is a substantially-spherical steam-dome O, which is secured to the boiler by an externally-threaded neck 0, which engages a threaded opening in the top thereof. Suspended from a hook D, secured to the dome on its inside, is a bag E, containing the desired medicating compound. Said bag is well down into the boiler A, so as to be in position to thoroughly impregnate the steam or vapor.
To a lateral extension or neck 0' of the dome is detachably secured one end of apipe or tube F, that extends downward and then upward, so that between its ends is a point in a plane lower than they. Water of condensation will flow from both ends to such point and into a vessel or cup G, detachably connected to the under side of the pipe F. Upon a shelf 9 of wire or a perforated copper plate I place a bag I, containing a medication, so that the water in passing through the vessel G may be medicated. This water I use for bathing the skin and to draw it off a cook or valve J is provided at thelower end of the vessel.
The outer discharge end of the pipe F has a small aperture f at its center of a considerably-less diameter than that of the tube, and said aperture is provided with a cook or stopper K, that is suitably held in place upon or in the pipe. Through this aperture the medicated steam or vapor passes in a small spray, being directed to the part of the body to be treated, the object being to deliver to the parts under treatment the medicated steam or vapor without carrying with it any of the water of condensation, it being desirable to have the vapor as free from water as possible.
Suitable handles 6 are provided on the boiler, and, if desired, a safety-valve M may also be provided.
My apparatus is preferably of such size that it will occupy but little space while in use and be readily portable. By making the pipe F separable from the dome G and the latter separable from the boiler the portability of the apparatus is enhanced, as will be readily seen. The separation of the dome and boiler also admits of the ready insertion and removal of the medication-holding device E.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the boiler having a steam-dome, of the suspended receptacle within the boiler, the tube leading fromsaid dome and an apertured cork to the end of said tube, and a vessel connected to the under side of said tube and provided with a cock.
2. The combination, with the boiler having a steam-dome, of the suspended receptacle within the boiler, the tube leading from said dome and an apertured cork to the end of said tube, and a vessel connected to the under side of said tube and provided with a cook,
tially as shown and described.
3. The combination, with the boiler having a, steam-dome, 0f thesuspended receptacle within the boiler, the tube leading from said dome and an apertured cork to the end of said tube, and a vessel connected to the under side of said tube and provided with a cock, and a reticulated shelf in said vessel, the said tube inclining from both ends toward its center, at which point said vessel is detachably connected.
In testimony whereof I ztffix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
ISABEL CASSIDY.
