COMBINED FOLDING BED AND DRESSING-CASE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 484,765, dated October 18, 1892.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. KIMERLY, a citizen of the United States,residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Folding Bed and Dressing-Case; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in a combined folding bed and dressing-case; and its object is to provide the same with certain new and useful features, hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of a device embodying my invention as it appears with the bed-frame opened out; Fig. 2, a horizontal section of the dresser, showing the bedframe in plan and partially closed, and also the same fully closed and within the case; Fig. 3, a detail in vertical section on the line 3 3 ot Fig. 2.

A represents a dressing-case, bureau, or chest of drawers of the usual external appearance, having the usual drawers B B B and a blind or false stationary drawer front B in place of the lower drawer, behind which is stowed away the folding-bed frame, which draws out at the end of said case A and consists, essentially, of'a tray O, having bottom, ends, and back secured to each other, and a detached front C', to the respective ends of which are secured the ends of the folding side rails, which rails are each made in three sections F, F', and F, the latter being secured at one end to the ends of the front C and at right angles thereto. The middle section F is hinged to the other end thereof at G and adapted to turn inward. To the inner end of said middle section is hinged the outer end of the inner section F by hinges G', adapted to turn outward. The inner ends of said section are provided with pivot-pins K at their respective upper and lower sides,

which engage grooves E in the upper side of the bottom ot' the tray C and the lower side of the inwardly-projecting strips D,attached to the top of each end of said tray. Said grooves E extend nearly from front to rear of said tray and at their outer ends are turned outward at right angles, as shown at E.

H H are legs pivoted to the side rails near their outer ends, which when turned down rest on the floor and support the outer end of the bed-frame, the other end being supported at one side by the case A and at the other by a leg II', formed of a portion of the bottom of the tray C, pivoted to the same and adapted to turn down and engage the floor. A cross-bar I is provided which is supported by cleats J on the inner side of the side rails. Said bar engaging the inner sides of said rails opposite the joints G', crowds the same outward and holds the side rails in line when the bed is open and locks the same by crowding the pins K outward into the outwardly-turned ends E ot the grooves E. Any convenient bed-bottom may be provided,and an increased number ot cross-bars I to support the same may be inserted.

The operation of my device is obvious from an inspection of the drawings and needs no further description.

1. A dressing-case or other similar article of furniture, in combination with an extensible bedstead received thereby, said bedstead comprising a tray C, having an open forward end, grooves in its bottom, and strips projecting inward from the upper ends of its sides, said st rips having grooves in their under sides, said grooves having outturned ends, a detached front to said tray, and side rails hinged to the ends of said detachedtrontand having l' on their inner ends pivot-pins engaging and adapted to travel in said grooves, and a bar adapted to engage said side rails at the hinged parts thereof and serving to crowd said hinges outward and the pivot-pins into the outturned ends of the grooves, substantially as described, and for the purposes specitied.
