Be it known that I, JAMES F. POAGE, of Kirksville, in the county of Adair and State of Missouri, have invented a new and improved Ouff Button and Fastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to improvements in a combined cuff button and fastener; and its object is to produce an extremely-simple de vice which may be easily applied toa cuff, which will hold the cuff in the exact position required and securely attach it to the shirtsleeve, and in which the fastener and cuffbutton are made integral to the end that an expensive cud-button may be used without the slightest danger of losing it.

Vith these ends in view my invention consists in a cuff button and fastenerthe construction of which will be hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a plan View of the device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with the fastening-jaws closedgand Fig. 3 is a detail side elevation of the fastening-jaws, showing them in an open position.

The cuff-button 10 may be of any approved design and it is made integral with a shank 11, which is slightly longer than an ordinary cuff and is bent ata right angle at the button end, as shown at 12, so that the cuff-button may be brought in proper position outside the cuff, while the shank will be held for the most part within thecuff. The rear end of the shank 11 terminates in a pair of jaws 13, which normally spring apart, as shown in Fig. 3, and which extend laterally at a slight angle to the shank. These jaws terminate at their free ends in inward] y-extending brads 14,which may be firmly clamped to the sleeve of a shirt and will hold the whole device in position. A clamp 15 is pivoted to the rear end of the shank at the base of the jaws, the clamp having its back side closed and its op posite side open, so that when swung into the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. l and by full lines in Fig. 3 it will permit the jaws to open, but when pushed upon the jaws, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, it will force them together and hold them in place, so that they cannot release their grip on the shirt-sleeve. In Fig. 2 I have shown the application of the device to a cuff. The shank and the attachments are made small enough so that they may be thrust through the buttonholes of a cuff, and to apply it to the jaws the clamp and the rear end of the shank arepushed inward through the two buttonholes at one end of the cuff and then outward through the two buttons at the opposite end, thus bringing the button into proper position,as shown in Fig. 2, the cuff being indicated by dotted lines. The jaws may then be secured to the shirt-sleeve in the manner described and the whole device will be held firmly in place.

From the foregoing description it will beseen that the cuff-button proper forms a part of the support and fastener, and hence that it cannot be lost.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A cuff-holder consisting in the fiat shank 11, having an outward projecting end 12, pro- Vided with a cuff-button, jaws13 in the plane of the shank and projecting at an angle from its opposite end, and a U-shape clasp 15, pivoted at the juncture of the jaws with the shank in the plane thereof and embracing the jaws along one edge to hold them from springing apart, substantially as set forth.
