UNITED VSfiATnS PATENT OFFicE.
AUGUST GOERTZ, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.`
STAMP AND MATCH Box.A
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 484,092, dated October 11, 1892.
Application filed J' une 4, 1892. Serial No. 435,499. (No model.)
.To` all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, AUGUST GOERTZ, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Newark,
in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stamp and Match Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a combined match-box and postage-stamp receptacle of increased convenience, to reduce the cost of construction and facilitate manufacture, and to secure other advantages and results, some of which will be referred to in connection with the description of the Working parts.
The invention consists in the improved match box and stamp receptacle combined and in the arrangements and combinations of parts, all substantially as Will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in Which like letters indicate corresponding parts in each of the several views,` Figure 1 is a plan of the improved device; Fig. 2, a side and Fig. 3 an end view of the same; Figs. 4, 5, and 6, enlarged sectional views taken on lines w, y, and a, respectively; Fig. 7, a detail view of a certain bottom piece or partition separatingthe match-chamberfrom the stampchamber; and Fig. 8 is a side view showing the two covers raisedfrom the body of the box.
In said drawings, a indicates the body ot' the box, made, preferably, of sheet metal and provided at its side edges with integral ears b,which provide bearings for a transverse pivotal pin or rivet c, extending across the mouthv are hinged two covers d and c, each of which is provided with a snap-catch f to engage a cooperating catch g on the end of thc box.
site end of said plate from said flange the said plate is provided with a teat or lug m, adapted to enter a recess n, formed in constructing the catch g. When secured in said recess, the
said teat or lug holds the plate in its elevated position. The said plate k is also provided with depending legs or supporting-standards 0 o, which rest against the sides and bottom of the box, as will be understood upon reference to Figst and 5, and thus hold the inner end of the partition-plate in position. The depending legs are preferably integral with the plate 7c. To hold the teat or lugm into the catch-recess n or to prevent longitudinal moveinent of the said plate Within the box, I prefer to indent the sides of the box, as indicated at p in Fig. 2 and form on the interior Walls of the said sides holding-lugs or keepers q, which engage the plate k or the legs thereof and hold the parts in proper relative position.
By the construction described a shallow receptacle or chamber is formed for the stamps without materially reducing the capacity of the match-chamber, which latter extends the full length of the box.
Means are providedfor lighting the matches, such as the applied friction-paper r on the inner side of the cover or the corrugated bot-- tom s.
Having thus described the-invention, what I claim as new isl. The improved match and stamp box herein described, comprisingv the body a, having ears b, providing bearings for a transverse pin IOO openings to the box and up from the bottom thereof, the said partition having the bottom plate k -and vertically-turned flange Z, sub- I5 stantially as set, forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 25th day of May, 1892.
AUGUST GOERTZ.
