l G. GIBSON.
SASH FASTENER.
No. 473,419. Patented Apr. `19, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEROLT GIBSON, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
SASH-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 473,419, dated April 19, 1892.
Application filed August 14, 1891.
'certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Sash Locks; and I do'declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of -the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to. provide a lock for windows that will be automatic in action, will prevent rattling of the sashes, or
the lowering of the upper sash without first raising the lower sash, this lock being intended for use in connection with a lock for holding the lower sash in its closed position,- 'or which an application for Letters Patent was iiled on July 27, 1891, Serial No. 400,802.
In carrying out my invention I proceed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, in which drawings- Figure l is a view in elevation looking toward the side casing of the window in illustration of my automatic window-sash lock as in position for locking the two sashes of a window together and to the casing, the parts being shown as in their locked position; and Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the parts as' in their unlocked position, the sashes being slightly separated. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are de- J[ached views in detail illustrating the construction of the several parts composing my lock.
The lettera designates the side frame or casing of a window, and b the vertical bead that separates the two sashes; c, the side vertical rail of the upper sash; d, the meetingrail of the said upper sash, and e the meetingrail of the lower sash. Upon the top edge of the meeting-rail of the lower sash is fixed the member A of the lock, which has a hook end A and a straight edge A2 for the purpose as will presently appear. Seated within the front surface of the side rail of the upper sash, opposite in position to that occupied by the member A, is the member B of the lock, which member has a curved socket, as at B', and a lug B2. Adjacent to the member B and fixed to the front edge of the vertical bead that separates the two sashes is the third member C of the lock, and such member is composed of a base to which is pivoted, as at Serial No. 402,643. (No model.)
c', a catch C', having at one extremity a hook c2 and the other end formed with a curved or camshaped surface c2. The hook c2 of the member C corresponds in contour to the socketB of the member B, and the curved end c2 of said member O is adapted to [it the hook end A of the member A.
The operation of the parts is as follows: The parts of the lock being in the position shown in Fig. 1, upon raising the lower sash the surface A2 of the member A is brought against the under surface of the cam end of the catch C', causing said catch to turn upon its pivot c', and thereby disengaging the hook c2 from the member B, the parts of the lock assuming the position shown in Fig. 2.l Thus the lowering of the upper sash is permitted. To lock the sashes of the window together, the upper sash must first be raised to its normal position, and, the lower sash being raised, upon lowering the lower sash the hook end A of the member A is brought into engagement with the top curved surfaceof the catchA C and said catch caused to assume a nearly horizontal position, as in Fig. 1,'with the hook end c2 engaging the lug B2 of the member B, so that the upper sash is locked and cannot be lowered without raising the lower sash to release the catch O', and the two sashes are by the said catch drawn together and rattling thereof prevented.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The lock described for automatically locking the upper sash of a window to the Vertical bead of the outside casing and to the lower sash, composed of the member A, hav- `ing hook end A secured upon the top sur- GEROLT GIBSON.
