BOOK MARK.-

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLARENCE LXVATSON, OF ATTLEBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS.
BOOK-MARK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 472,632, dated April 12, 1892.
Application filed December 26, 1891. Serial No. 416,151. (No model.)
ment in Book-Marks; and I declare the followingto be a specification thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Like letters indicate like parts.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 0050 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 illustrates the use of my improved book-mark.
My invention consists of a metallic clasp of the form hereinafter specified, in combination with a ribbon or flexible marker. The metallic clasp is made of tempered or spring stock, bent in the form shown; The portion ais elongated and somewhat pointed at the end. The bend b is substantially circular in crosssection, as seen in Fig. 3. The bend b is slotted, as indicated at c, leavinga cross-bar d. (Shown in cross-section in Fig. 3 and in elevation by a dotted line in Fig.1.) The end '6 is preferably made ornamental in shape, and may be embossed with a medallion or other design; but its width is greater than that of the portion a. A ribbon m or other flexible marker is passed through the slots 0, being confined in place by the cross-bar d. The cross-bar is shown in the drawings as integral with the clasp; but it may be made a separate piece and fastened to the clasp in position by solder or otherwise.
In Fig. 4.1 illustrate the use of this device. The clasp is slipped over the top edge of the back at of the binding of the book, and the ribbon on is inserted between the pages of the book, which are to be designated thereby.
The portion a, being elongated and pointed,
as shown, is useful for a paper-cutter to out the folded edges of the magazine or book to which this device is applied. The portions a e of the clasp can be easily sprung apart, when necessary, for the insertion of the back a of the book or of a page between them, by seizing the edges of the portion 6 between the finger and thumb, when it can be slightly opened from the portion a, because of the greater width of the port-ion -e, which enables the seizing of that part independently of the other. The ribbon mmay be dispensed with, in which case the slots and cross-bar are not necessary. The clasp then is useful as a bookmark to put on the edge of a page, the greater width of the portion e enabling the opening of the clasp, as already stated. It is obvious, also, that the flexible marker or ribbon can be attached to the metallic clasp through the bend of the clasp, if desired.
I claim as a novel and useful invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The improved book-mark consisting of the clasp having the elongated portion a, the portion a, lying contiguous thereto, but of a greater width, and the bend I), having a slot 0, in combination with the flexible marker m, inserted through said slot of the clasp, substantially as described.
2. The metallic clasp having the portions 0 c, with a slotted bend Z), and a crossbar d, in combination with a flexible marker m, connected to the clasp by said cross-bar and slots. substantially as shown.
CLARENCE L. WATSON.
