(No Model.)
J. J. SAGBR v LOOK FOR TRUNKS. VALISES, BOXES, M. No. 471,277. Patented Mar. 22, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT QEEICE.
JEAN JACQUES SAGER, OF BERNE, SWITZERLAND.
LOOK FOR TRUNKS, VALISES, BOXES, &.c.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 471,277, dated March 22, 1892.
Application filed December 11,1891. Serial No. 414,673. (No model.) Patented in England August 11, 1888, No. 11.626; in
France January 10,1889, No. 192,007, and in Belgium August 8, 1889,110. 87,316.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JEAN JAcoUEsSAcER, saddler, of Berne, Switzerland, have invented an Improved Lock for Trunks, Valises, Chests, Boxes, and the Like, (for which Letters Patent have been granted to me in Great Britain, dated August 11, 1888, No. 11,626; in France, dated January 10, 1889, No. 192,007, and in Belgium, dated August 8, 1889, No. 87,316,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in or connected with locks for trunks, valises, chests, boxes, and the like, as described and claimed in my United States Patent, No. 399,784, dated March 19, 1889, and will be readily understood on reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a trunk to which my improved lock, combined with a strap and means .for holding an address label or card, is anplied. Fig; 2 is a front view of the lock detached from the trunk. Fig. 3 is a transverse central section of the same in its closed position, and the strap engaged in a pin or stud on the front of the trunk. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section of the upper part of Fig. 2,
showing the address label or card in its frame. Fig. 5 is a transverse central section showing the hasp raised or thrown back, the address label or card as it would appear when being withdrawn from its frame, and the strap disengaged from the pin or stud.
My invention consists, essentially, in the combination of the hasp and staple with a strap surrounding the trunk or other article, and having a frame for an address label or card into which the said label or card is secured by the hasp when the lock is closed, as shown and described in my United States Patent, numbered 399,7 84, with a pin or stud to avoid the strain on the strap bearing on the lock. The frame I), fixed to the cover of the trunk, contains the address label or card 20, which can only be withdrawn when the hasp d is open, as shown in Fig. 5, the projections d d on the hasp cl retaining the label or card to, when the hasp is shut.
x m are spring-blades for keeping the label or card in place in the frame.
The staple e of the hasp d passes through one of a suitably-shaped hole to of the strap 4, which passes underneath the frame I), and said staple is fastened by means of the bolt f of the lock proper a. The projections d d on the hasp 01 form a kind of groove in which the strap r lies. These projections, besides preventing the falling out of the label or card, as before stated, also prevent the hasp d from being turned inward, as frequently happens with hasps now in use. p S is a pin or stud which traverses the front wall a'of the lock proper a, and which is riveted to the back wall a of said lock proper a. Its object is to avoid the strain on the strap bearing on the look. This pin or stud S is provided with a suitable notch s, and the strap is hookedto said pin, the lock having only to prevent its being disengaged therefrom.
The hasp d is provided with a recess 01 formed like a cap, and fitting over the end of the above-described pin or stud S when the hasp d is closed.
Having now particularly ascertained the nature of my invention, I claim In locks for trunks, valises, chests, boxes, and the like, the combination, with the lock proper a, of the pin or stud S, riveted to the back wall a of said lock proper to and traversing the front wall a of the same and provided with a notch s, and of the hasp d, having projections d and 61 and a recess 61 to fit over the pin or stud S, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my.
name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. JEAN JACQUES SAGER.
