ROLL-PAPER HOLDER AND CUTTER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 471,226, dated March 22, 1892. I

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES K. PICKLES, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Roll-Paper Holders and Cutters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure I is a front elevation of my improved machine. Fig. II is a side elevation.

My invention relates to certain improvemen ts in machines intended more particularly for use in holding and cutting wrapping-paper and the like, but which may be used for other purposes; and it consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a suitable base, to which is secured standards or end pieces 2. To the standards 2 hangers 3 are pivoted at 4. The lower ends of these hangers are notched, as shown at 5, to receive the journals 6 of the roll of paper 7 8 represents arms pivoted to the standards 2 at 9. To the outer ends of these arms a knife 10 is secured. The inner ends of the arms are provided with slots 11, in which fit pins 12 on the hangers 3. The slots 11 are preferably curved, as shown in Fig. II.

The operation is as follows: As the paper is removed theroll swings gradually in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. II, the arms 3 moving from an incline toward a vertical position. As the roller thus swings on the removal of the paper the knife is automatically drawn or moved toward the center of the roll by the connection between the arms and the hangers. It will thus be seen that as the roll decreases in size the knife is caused to approach the center of the roll by means of the tendency of the roll to move the hangers to a vertical position. It will also be seen that the roll is supported on the free ends of the hangers, that the roll and free ends of the hangers are supported on the free :ends of the arms, and that the roll, the free ends of the hangers, and the free ends of the arms are supported by the knife bearing on the roll of paper. As the roll decreases in size the free ends of the arms and the knife and the hangers approach each other.

I do not herein broadly claim a knife held against the roll of paper by means of the weight of the roll.

I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of supports, hangers for supporting the roll, pivoted to the supports, arms pivoted to the supports and carrying a knife at one end, and slot-and-pin connection between the arms and hanger substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination of pivoted hangers supporting the roll of paper and arms carrying a knife and pivoted to the standards, said arms being moved by the swinging of the roll to cause the knife to be-automatically held against the roll of paper, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination of the standards, hangers pivoted to the standards and supporting the roll of paper, arms having curved slots and pivoted to the standards, knife secured to the outer ends of the arms, and pins on the hangers, fitting in the slots of the arms, substantially as set forth.

4.. The combination of the base 1, standards 2, hangers 3, pivoted to the standards at 4 and supporting the roll of paper, arms having slots 11 and pivoted to the standards at 9, knife 10, secured to the outer ends of the arms, and pins 12 on the hangers, fitting 111 said slots, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

5. A roll supported by hangers, having fixed pivots, combined with a knife held in contact with the roll by its connection with said hangers.

6. The combination of the hangers pivoted to the standards and supporting a roll and the arms pivoted to the standards, supporting the knife and connected to said hangers for supporting the latter on the roll, so as to transfer the weight of the roll to the arms.

7. The combination of the roll, a knife supported by pivoted arms and bearing on he roll, and the roll-supports connected with the knife-supports and having fixed bearings.
