Description

Wfjffffmz- Witnesses E* Inventor ils-irren STATES PATENT @ridono WT. T. MERSEREAU, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVED FU RNlTURE-CASTER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. IS7, EB 7, dated April 4, 1865.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, W. T. MERsEREAU, of Newark, Essex county, New Jersey, have invented, made, and applied to use a new and Improved Caster for Articles of Furniture, Trunks, and Boxes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and correct description ot' the same, reference being` had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l is a View of my improved caster as applied to any article of furniture; Fig. 2, a sectional view of the same; Fig. 3, detached view of ball or roller B Fig. et, detached view of ring C; Fig. 5, interior view of caster as applied.
In the drawings like parts ot' the invention are designated by the saine letters of reference.
The nature of my invention consists (a) in the use or employment of a ball or roller, B, provided with thejournals b l), when the same shall be constructed as hereinafter fully shown; (b), in combining with the ball or roller B so constructed the collars d and d2, base or stand A, and thc ri ng C, as hereinafter fully described.`
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, l will speak of its construction and operation.
A shows the base or stand for supporting the ball or roller B. The lower portion of this base A is provided on its interior with the turned shoulder a, forming a socket, in which the ball or roller B plays. Vhen desirable, the lower portion of this base A may be made of a separate piece of metal, and may be riveted to the upper portion of the same, as
clearly shown in Fig. l of the drawings.
B shows the ball or roller, provided with the journals b, made with the ball or roller B; or the ball B may be drilled and the journals b inserted in the ends of the same.
C shows a ring of metal placed directly over the ball or roller B and bearing upon tlc collars d d2 upon the journals b, thus serving, in connection with the turned shoulder a, to keep the ball or roller B in its proper position.
d d2 are collars placed over the journals b, and serve to prevent the friction occasioned by the movement of the ball or roller B upon the turned shoulder a, wearing upon the journals b. These collars d d2, it will be observed, when the ball or roller B is in operation, play in different directions.
The various parts of my improved caster, being thus constructed, may be combined by placing the collars d d2 upon the journals el, inserting the ball or roller B within the stand or base A, so that the collars d d2 bear upon the turned shoulder a, placing the ring c directly over the ball or roller B, and then attaching the stand or base A to the article of furniture, box, or trunk, so that the lower surface ot' the saine shall bear tightly upon the upper portion of the ring G.
The prominent advantages ot' my improvement are its economy, durability, ease with which it can be applied, and that, being contained within the frame or base A, directly under the article to which it is attached, it is less liable to be injured and is out ofthe way, although fully as eli'ective in operation as any caster in use.
Having thus described I claim as new, and ters Patent, is
1. The ball or roller B, provided with the journals b, when the same shall be constructed as shown, for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with the same, the base A, ring O, and collars d d2, when the same shall be combined substantially as shown, for the purpose set forth.
VM. T. ME RSEREA U.
