(No ModeL) I P. A. BRADFORD.
DISSOLVING MECHANISM FOR MAGIC LANTBRNS. No. 470,907. Patented Mar. 15, 1892.
m uuwsus 3 I AAA macaw WW flan/Z WWWL A I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PARK. A. BRADFORD, OF OSWEGO, KANSAS.
DISSOLVING MECHANISM FOR MAGIC LANTERNS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,907, dated March 15, 1892.
Application filed June 2, 1891. Serial No. 394,898. (N 0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PARK. A. BRADFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oswego, in the county of Labette and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Mechanism for Dissolving Magic Lanterns and Stereopt-icons, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the lens-adjusting mechanism of such sets of lenses as are moved to and from each other for the purpose of producing an effect known as the dissolving-view effect, and I attain this object by means of the following-described mechanism, as illustrated by drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan or elevation of entire mechanism; Fig. 2, a cross-section'on dotted line 4 5, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, a plan of singleacting lever and light-shielding shutter.
Bracket B, Fig. 2, secured by screws to the stationary portion of the lens-tube, forms the pivotal bearing for the actuating-lever A. The tube G, in which the tube L moves, is slotted or grooved, as at I, Fig. 1, so as to allow the stud D, which is secured rigidly to L, to move to the extent of the travel of the tube L. The shutter or light-shield M, Fig. 3, is formed of thin slats, which are set at such an angle as to gradually shut off the light as it closes. It is hinged to the'inner side of the sleeve K at T and made to open by the tube L striking it near the hinge and against the lug T.
(See dotted lines, Fig. 3.) The object in this arrangement is to produce what is known as the dissolving effect of a magic lantern or stereopticon, and when two lanterns or instruments are used by means of the double arrangement of the lever, as shown in Fig. 1, one of the views can be thrown into focus by the same motion that the other View is thrown out of focus and so dissolved.
To operate the mechanism, it is secured to the lens-case, as described, the studs D D, Fig. 2, taking the place of the rack and pinion as used most generally. Moving the handle of the lever moves the tubes L L and actuates the shutter M automatically.
Having thus described my invention, I claim In a dissolving mechanism for magic lanterns and stereopticons, the combination, with a bracket adapted to be attached to the stationary portion of atelescoping lens-tube, of a lever adapted to work pivotally upon said bracket and having pivotal connection with the sliding portion of the lens-tube, said sliding portion of the lens-tube sliding against and under the log of the light-shield or shutter, and thus elevating said shutter to upper side of lens-tube or moving in the opposite direction permits the same to drop.
PARK. A. BRADFORD.
