TRANSOM-LIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,780, dated March 15, 1892.
Application filed November 28, 1891. serial No. 413,414. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. OoLToN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Transom-Lifters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawlngs.
This invention pertains to transom-lifters, and more particularly to the guides for the rod and the base of the part holding the thumbscrew. It often happens that transom-lifters have but a narrow foundation to which to be fastenedfor instance, a very narrow molding or beading at the side of the door-frame, so narrow sometimes that there is barely room for the screws to be put in, even though all in a line. Where there is sufficient width of molding or foundation, ordinarily the screws are put in one on either side of the upright rod, so that a line drawn through the screws would be at right angles to the rod. In order to fit all cases, a merchant is obliged to carry a stock of both right and lefthand liftersthat is, some lifters in which the screws-will all be on the right-hand side of the rod and other lifters in which the screws willbe on the lefthand side of the rod.
The primary object of the present invention is to obviate the necessity of the carrying of a double stock and to permit of the adjustment of the screws either to the right or left, or at right angles to the rod. I construct the base, or rather the base and the guide, in two parts, so arranged as to be readily adjusted without removing the guide from the rod. The guide at the upper end of the rod may or may not be of the adjustable kind, as this may be slipped over the upper end of the rod and instantly made right or left, as may be desired; but inasmuch as the riveted stirrup or brace comes between this upper guide and the other one it will at once be seen how desirable it is tohave the middle guide, as well as the foundation of the thumb-piece, reversible.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which' Figure 1 is a face View of my improvements applied to the rod. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section through the same, with the rod in elevation. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of one portion of the thumb-screw base. Fig. 4 is a like view of the other part. Fig. 5 is a plan of the guide-base. Fig. 6 is a like view of the guide. Fig. 7 is a central section through a modified form of guide and base.

Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the upright rod of a transom-lifter of known construction. B is the stirrup for the brace-arn1,the latter be ing indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2 and designated by the letter O. I
The novelty in the present invention resides in the making of'the guide and its base in such a manner as to permit of the adjustment before mentioned. This may be accomplished in various ways. I have illustrated several of them.
Referring to Figs. 3 and 4, will be seen the lower guide, or that which also holds the thumb-screw which retains the rod, and consequently the transom in its adjusted position. It consists of the base or foundation D,
having the apertured ears or lugs 61 for the reception of the screws by which it is secured in position, the said lugs or cars being upon one side of the opening cl, so that the screws will be in line. The opening d is so constructed as to permit of the ready turning of the portion E therein and yet prevent displacement. It is shown as being flanged, as seen at (1 and the lower or inner end of the barrel or portion E is provided with a correspondingly-shaped flange e, as seen in Fig. 3, to engage the same, as seen best in Fig. 2 in section, the barrel being provided with a passage-way e for the passage of the upright rod A, and with a screw-threaded socket e at right angles thereto for the reception of the thumb-screw F, as seen in Fig. 2. The connection of the base and barrel may be otherwise formed-for instance, by making the parts beveling, as seen in Fig.7. The center guide G is of a similar construction, the base g being provided with the apertured ears or lugs g, and the guide-ring'G, having a base portion 9 working beneath a flange of the base g, the upper face of the said base being provided with the diametrically opposite notches g to permit of the introduction of the ring portion from the rear, and then when turned at right angles to said notches or in any position otherwise than coincident therewith the parts cannot be separated.
The mode of operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which the different positions of the parts are indicated by full and dotted lines.
Modifications in detail may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages. For instance, the aperture in the base maybe rectangular and the base of the ring of a corresponding shape, as shown by dotted lines in Figs. Sand 6; but the other forms are preferred, as the ring is most often turned after being placed upon the rod.
hat I claim as new is 1'. A guide for atransom-lifter rod, consisting of a flanged base with apertured ears, a guiding portion rot-atably connected with the base and having passageway for the rod, and a socket for the reception of holding means for the rod, as set forth.
2. A rod-guide having a passage for a rod and a flanged termination formed for rotatable and removable connection with a base, as set forth.
