H. M. HAMRIOK.
GANDLBSTIGK.
No. 479,362. Patented July 19, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
HARRY M. I-IAMRICK, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR T 0 THE MECHANICAL NOVELTIES COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
CANDLESTlCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 479,362, dated July 19, 1892. Application filed February 2, 1892. Serial No. 420,032. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HARRY M. HAMRIOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Candlesticks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to candlesticks, and more particularly to the construction and arrangement thereof.
The principal objects of my invention are, first, to provide a simple, durable, inexpensive, and effective candlestick for household and other purposes, and, second, to provide a portable counterbalanced candle-holding device with a transparent or semi-transparent base and of such construction and arrangement as that in use, shadows around and about the same, as well as dropping of grease from the appliance, are entirely prevented.
My invention consists of the improvements in candlesticks hereinafter described and claimed.
The general characteristic features of my invention will be more fully understood from the following descriptiomtaken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in which- Figure l is a View, partly in elevation and partly in section, of a candlestick embodying features of my invention and with a candle mounted in the holder; and Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the device with the candle removed.
Referring to the drawings, A is a saucershaped skeletonbase-plate provided with radial arms and with an externally and internally recessed hub a formed integral therewith.
b is a plate or disk, of glass, celluloid, or other suitable material, mounted in the recesses a and a formed in the upper edge of disk or plate I) and adapted to support the same firmly in position by means of a threaded 5o stud-bolt cl, inserted through a curved or inversely-disposed C-shaped arm F, the seat 0', and the internally-recessed hub a and to which bolt is applied a nut (Z for holding thereby the several parts securely in operative position. The upper extremity of the curved arm F is provided with an enlargement having an internal socket f for the reception of a ball g, formed integral with or suitably secured to the stem g of the candleholder G, of any preferred construction, thereby forming a universal connection to permit of a limited range of movement in various directions of the candle-holder G. This stem 9 is also provided with a counter-balance or weighted ball g his a candle fitting into the holder G.
Hitherto in the use of candlesticks two objectionable features have been present in them: first, the constant tendency, unless great care was exercised, for grease to drop from the appliance onto articles, as well as the floor, necessitating thereby time and labor to remove the same, and, second, of the stick or device when the candle was lighted casting a shadow for some distance about and around the same. In my improved device both of said objectionable features are entirely obviated by the provision of a transparent or semi-transparent base-plate and supporting the candle in its holder by a ball-and-socket joint and a counter-balance or weighted ball in substantially the manner illustrated in Fig. 1, the latter at the same time afiording the candle-holder a range of movement in differ ent directions by means of said universal c011- nection.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A candlestick provided with abase comprising a saucer-shaped skeleton plate having radial arms carrying a central hub, a framework provided with radial arms carrying a central seat, atranslucent plate or disk intermediate of the plate and framework, a weighted candle-holder provided with a ball, and a curved arm secured to said seat and hub and provided with a spherical socket engaging said ball, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a candlestick, a base comprising a In witness whereof I have hereunto set my saucer-shaped. skeleton plate having radial signature in the presence of two SllbSGIlblIlg I0 arms carrying a central hub, a framework witnesses.
provided with radial arms carrying a central V v 5 seat, a translucent plate or disk intermediate 7 HARRY HAMRICK' 0f the plate and frame, and means for con- \Vitnesses: necting said framework and plate, substan- J. WALTER DoUGLAss, tially as and for the purposes set forth. THOMAS M. SMITH.
