A. w. KENT. GURLING TONGS HEATER.
No.-478, 437. Patented July 5, 1892.
UNITED STATES ALEXANDER W. KENT, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
PATENT OFErcE.
CURLING-TONGSJHEATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 478,437, dated July 5, 1892.
Application filed April 21, 1891. Renewed June 6, 1892- Serial No. 485,654. (No model.)
To a whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER W. KENT, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curling-Tongs Heaters, of which the following; is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is an elevation showing my improved heater in use on a lamp; Fig. 2, a like view showing the same in use with agasjet; Fig. 3, an end elevation of the heater detached; Fig. 4, a bottom plan view of the same, and Fig. 5 aview illustrating modification in the formation of the supporting crossbars.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
My invention relates especially to a device for heating tongs or combs which are employed for curling or crimping human hair; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, the object being to produce a simpler, cheaper, and more etfective device of this character than is now in ordinary use.
The nature and operation of the improvement will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation:
In the drawings, A represents the heater considered as a whole. Said heater comprises a bell cl, which is of sufficient diameter to project over the sides of a lamp-chimney B or gas-jet O. A horizontally-arranged tubef is secured to the top of the bell 01, said bell opening at 9 into said tube. The ends of the tube may be turned inward at-h, (see Fig. 3,) a slot 4) being formed in the top of said inwardly-turned flange to receive the teeth of a curling-comb D. Across the bottom of the bell d supporting-bars iare'secured. These bars are preferably crimped or corrugated, as
shown in Fig. 5, to prevent them from slip-- ping on the top of the chimney B. Springs j are secured to the bell and are of suitable length to enter eyes 70 or other attaching means on the lamp-burner E.
In the use of myimprovement the bell d is disposed on top of the lamp-chimney and secured, as described, by the springs j and corrugated rods '6, preventing lateral movement of said bell. The heat from said chimney passes through the opening 9 in the bottom ofthe bell andinto the radiating-tubef. The tongs or comb D may be inserted at will in the tube f and heated in a manner which will be readily understood without a more explicit description.
To attach the device to a gas-burner F a bracket m is secured to said burner, said bracket being provided with vertical standards p, which support the bell (1 above the flame O, the operation of this device being the same as when the heater is secured to the lamp-chimney.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is 1. A heater for curling-tongs, comprising a bell, a horizontally-arranged tube secured to and opening centrally into said bell, and mechanism for supporting said bell over a lamp or gas burner, substantially as described.
2. The heater A, comprising the bell dand tube f, secured thereto, the opening g, lead- 8o ing from said bell to said tube, the supporting-bars e', secured in the mouth of said bell, and means for securing the bell in position on a lamp-chimney, substantially as described.
3. A heater for curling-tongs, comprising a bell, a horizontally-arranged tube secured in the apex thereof and opening centrally in said bell, and corrugated supporting-bars disposed across the mouth of said bell, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 9
4:- The tube f, provided with the flange h and slot 1), in combination with the bell d, secured to said tube and opening therein at g, and the supporting-bars i, secured to said bell, all being arranged to operate substan- 5 tially as described.
ALEXANDER W. KENT.
