Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
A. PRESGOTT NASH, OF WEYMOUTEI, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPRovl-:D BooTLEc.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 47,743, dated May 16, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, A. PREscorr NASH, of Weymouth, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have'invented a new and Improved Manufacture of Boot-Legs; and I do hereby declare that the following, taken in connection with the drawings, which accompany and form part of this specification, is a description of my invention sufficient to enable those skilled in the art to practice it.
ln that variety of boots known to the trade as opera boots,7 and in which the vamp is made of a separate piece from the leg-front and the coun ter separate from the leg-back, and in which the front of the leg is not crimped with 4the vamp, as in those cases where the vamp and leg'front are of one piece of leather, it is a desideratum to make the leg of light, soft leather, and at the same time have it ornamental in appearance and stiff enough in the direction of its length not to break down and form wrinkles around the leg, and this is true of all light dress-boots where the leg is made of separate pieces from the vamp.
To accomplish `this desideratum is the object of my invention, which consists in ribbing or corrugating (by pressure or percussion) boot-legs in the general direction of their length, by which breaking down of the leg and wrinkling around it are prevented and longitudinal stiffness is obtained, while at the same time the general appearance of the leg and of the surface of the leather is greatly improved.
In the practice of my invention the parts of the leg, front, and back are submitted to the action of a die, (preferably under pressure,) on which die are formed, by casting or by engraving, ribs or parallel projections of it appears when laid out hat, as when removed from the die. Fig. 2 shows a sectionof the same taken in the line z z. (Seen-in Fig. l.)
I am aware that it is not new to corrugate leather for various purposes, and that even corrugated leather has been employed in the vam ps and counters of shoes, as, for example, in Andrew Vetterspatent. of May 22, 1846, and in the Patent No. 27,918, dated April 17, 1860; but I do not claim corrugating leather, and conne myself strictly to the new manufacture herein described, the corrugations in which are made for a different purpose than those in the cases referred to;
I claim- A boot-leg when corrugated substantially as and for the purpose speciied.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 11th day of March, A. D. 1865.
A. PRESOOTT NASH. In presence of- J. B. CEosBY, W. B. GLEAsoN.
