CARPET-SWEEPER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 476,211, dated May 31, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, SILAS H. RAYMOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of 5 Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oarpet-Sweepers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in carpet-sweepers; and its object is to provide the same with certain novel and useful features, as hereinafter more fully described, and

particularly pointed out in the claim, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an end elevation of a device embodying my invention, with parts broken away; Fig. 2, a transverse vertical section of the same, and Fig. 3 a vertical sectional detail on the line 00 0c of Fig. 1.

The driving-wheels D are provided with compressible elastic rims E, made of soft rub- 0 ber,which are detachable and engage grooves in the rims of said wheels.

F designates arms which are provided with studs F at their inner ends, upon which said driving-wheels are journaled, and at their 5 outer ends are pivoted upon the inside surfaces of angle-plates G, which are provided with flanges H, thereby forming chambers H, within which the inner ends of. said arms are located, said ends being thereby protected.

0 These angle-plates G also serve to brace and strengthen the casing and provide a more secure fastening for the arms than is furnished by the cases, which are ordinarily made of thin wood. The flanges H, being located at oppo- 5 site sides of said arms, serve as stops to limit the motion thereof, so that when the sweeper is lifted from the floor the wheels D will not fall too far away from the pulley O, and also prevent said wheels from passing said pulley in an upward direction. The inner ends of said arms F thus have a limited movement inward and upward, whereby contact is maintained between said wheels and pulley. By compression of the soft-rubber rims E at the point of contact with the floor and brush-pulley its frictional surface is increased, and also vertical elasticity secured, whereby the brush is brought in closer contact with the carpet by pressure upon the bail B without the necessity of employing springs or other supple- 6o mental devices for the purpose.

I I are the dust-pans, pivoted near their inner edges at J and having inner upturned edges having perforations through which the hooks M on the ends of the springs K pass, which springs extend upward in a curve and thence outward along the angle'of the case, to which they are secured at their fixed end in any suitable manner. Said spring has an intermediate part L substantially at right angles to said hook M, which when the pan is opened a sufficient distance contacts the edge of the same and stops its further movement. I thus provide these pans with independent springs, which serve to close the same and which also, by their peculiar form and relation to the pans, serve to stop the movement of the same when opened.

What I claim is In a carpet-sweeper, driving-Wheels having compressible elastic rims engaging a pulley on the brush-shaft, said wheels journaled to rigid arms extending from said journals diag' onally outward and upward and pivoted at their outer ends to angle-plates having stops to limit the movement of said arms, substantially as described.
