SEED-PLANTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 476,056, dated May 31, 1892,
Application filed September 26,1891. Serial No. 406959. (No motlel To LM whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANDERS MATsoN, of Moline, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Seed-Planters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates particularly to an iinproved corn-planter, though it can be adapted for planting other grain, the object of the invention being to provide a device that shall drop the grain at regular intervals, and also mark the places where the next row is to be dropped,
My invention consists in the peculiar de tails of construction and combination of part-s, all of which will be fully described and claimed.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a top plan view of my improved planter. Fig. 2 is a side View of the same. Fig. 3 is a view from the opposite side of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a sectional View of the dropping-wheel and operating mechanism on line 4 4, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view of the colter on line 5 5 of Fig. 3. In carrying out my invention I employ a draft-beam B, and a supporting-beam B', parallel with the draft-beam. A stub-axle h is journaled in a bracket b', attached to the draft-beam, and upon the inner end of said axle is mounted the supporting-wheel A, said wheel having an annular hub, which revolves upon an inner eccentric-Wheel A', carrying the anti-friction rollers a between the disks which compose said inner wheel. A horizontal shaft C is passed through the inner wheel A eccentric tothe axle b, the opposite end of said shaft being journaled in the supporting-beam B'. The outer end of the axle b is provided with a crank-arm b2, said arm being journaled in a frame b3. An elbowlever Zis pivoted upon the shaft C upon the outside of the wheel A and connected with the axle b, whereby said axle, being eccentric to the shaft, cau be raised or lowered by operating the lever, thereby raising or lowering the dropping-wheel D when so desired.
A dropping-Wheel D is4 mounted upon the shaft C, said wheel consisting of a thin rim d, which rolls upon the ground, the hub d", and the spokes (Z2, connecting the rim and hub portion. The hub portion is divided transversely into two sections cl3 and d4, and connected with said sections is a tapering feedchute (Z5, said feed-chute being arranged in the place of a spoke, the lower end of said chute communicating with an opening d6 produced in the rim of the wheel. The section d3 is employed as a seed-chamber and is provided with an inlet-door for reiilling, (Src.
A valveE is arranged in the seed-chamber at the mouth of the feed-chute, said valve being mounted upon a rock-shafte, which extends into the section d4, wherein said shaft is provided With an arm e and a spring e2 to throw the valve back into position.
A cam-disk E is mounted upon the shaft C within the section d4, said cam being rigid upon the shaft C and adaptedto intermittently engage the arm e and operate the valve E. A slide-valve E2 is arranged within the feed-chute, and connected with the inner end of the same is a strap e3, which engages the cam E', and as said cam revolves the said slide-valve is reciprocated,opening and closing the delivery end of the feed-chute. A protecting slide -plate E3 is also arranged within the feed-chute opposite the slide-valve, the opposing faces of said slide plate and valve having a series of rack-teeth thereon, and between said plates is arranged a pinion e4, whereby as the slide-valve recedes the slide-plate comes forward and prevents any dirt entering the feed-chute.
A marking-prong E( is secured to the feed chute to indicate the place where the grain has been deposited. Although I have shown only one feed-chute, it is evident that any dcsired number can be employed.
The outer end of the shaft C is made hollow, as shown, and in said hollow end is inserted the rigid axle of the marking-wheel F, said marking-wheel having a bifurcated spoke f, which is arranged in alignment with the feed-chute, so as to mark the next row preparatory to planting.

Upon the beam B is secured a triangular supporting-frame B2, and upon said frame is mounted a seed-hopper B2, said hopper being essentially cubical in form.
A horizontal shaft Gis passed transversely through the seed-hopper, and upon one end is mounted a lnarking-Wheel G', as clearly shown. A cam-shaped disk G2 is mounted upon the opposite end of the shaft G and upon the exterior of the cam-disk is mounted a ratchet-disk G2. A friction -clutch H is mounted upon the horizontal shaft G, said clutch being adapted to be thrown in and out of engagement with the hub of the dropping- Wheel, and rigid with said clutch is an eccentric H'. The clutch is operated by means of a lever H2, pivoted to an arm H2, secured to the rear end of the supporting-beam, said arm carrying a spring-pin h, which holds the lever in its adjusted position.
A lever K is pivoted to the beam B', said lever having a finger k, which engages the eccentric H', and said lever is also provided with a weighted arm 7c', arranged upon the opposite side. A pitman K is connected to the lever K, said pitman carrying an operatingpawl L upon its end, which engages the ratchet-wheel G3 and turns the shaft G. A catchpawl L is'also mounted upon the end of the pitman, said catch-pawl being adapted to engage the under side of the ratchet-Wheel and prevent the lever going too far back. As the eccentric revolves it engages the nger 7c and rocks the lever. This operates the pitman and revolves the shaft, and as the eccentric becomes disengaged the weighted arm will throw the lever and pitman back into their normal positions.
A disk M is mounted upon the shaft G adjacent to the side of the hopper, said disk being provided with a series of seed-cups m, and to the disk M is adjustably attached a disk M', having beveled projections m', which form the bottoms of the seed-cups. The side of the hopper adjacent to the seed-disk is cut away, as at M2, and a delivery-chute N is attached to the hopper at that point. Atwo-way valve N' is arranged at the bottom of the deliverychute, and connected thereto is a lever N2. A lever N3 is pivoted to the side of the hopper, said lever having three arms, one arm n engaging the cam-disk G2. Another-arm n' engages androckstheleverN2,and therebyoperatesthe valve N. The third arm n2is connected with an arm O, pivoted to the side of the hopper, the free end of said arm O carrying a rod O', which is pivoted to the beam B, the arms O and valve N'beingso arranged with relation to each other that as the seed drops the arm and rod will be vibrated, thereby notifying the operator when the seed has dropped. A colter P is journaled to the end of the delivery-chute, and also a scraper P', the said colter having a conical hub and a sand-cap covering the same.
A covering-shovel Q is secured to the frame B2 to the rear of the delivery-chute for the purpose of covering the grain that has been deposited. In case I desire I may revolve the shaft G by an ordinary check-wire, the check-wheel R being secured upon said shaft, and in order to prevent said wheel revolving too freely I employ a pawl R', which is connected with a rocking lever R2, pivoted above the wheel R. As the check-rope, with buttons thereon, passes under the forward end of lever R2 the pawl is lifted and the wheel allowed to revolve the required distance. By this time the check-rope, with buttons thereon, has reached the other end of lever, operated the same, and throws the pawl down, locking the wheel against further revolution or accidental displacement. A scraper S is attached to the beam B and adapted to scrape the rim of the delivery-wheel D. A brake S is also attached to said beam to brake the ground and delivery wheel. This is employed in spacing the deposits of seed from the delivery-wheel, and in order to check the shaft G at anytime a friction-clutch S2 is employed, which can be thrown out of contact with the hub of the marker-wheel mounted upon the end of said shaft. A brake S3 is also attached to the lelbow-lever and adapted to bear upon the shaft C or a friction-collar mounted thereon.
From the above descriptionthe operation of the various parts of my device will be readily understood.
In forming the frame B2 triangular the covering-shovel Q can be set at any desired distance from the grain-row and one or more shovels can be used and secured to the said frame by a screw-clamp. The said clamp may have toothed jaws by which to hold the shovels in any angle desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new isl. The combination,with the parallel beams, of -the stub-axle having a crank-arm, the ground-wheel, the delivery or feeding wheel journaled eccentric thereto, the horizontal shaft parallel with the stub-axle, and elbowlever, all arranged substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination,with the parallel beams, of the stub-axle having a crank-arm, the horizontal shaft, the ground-wheel mounted on the axle, the delivery or feeding wheel journaled on the horizontal shaft, and the marker-wheel connected with the horizontal shaft and having a bifurcated spoke, substantially as shown and described.
3. An improved delivery or feeding wheel composed of a rim, spokes, and a hub-section, said hub-section being formed in two sections, a feed-chute connected with one of the same, and a valve at the mouth of the feed-chute, all arranged substantially as shown and described.
4. The combination, with the horizontal shaft, of the cam mounted thereon, the delivery or feeding wheel arranged upon said shaft and having a hub divided into two sections, a feed-chute connected with one of the sections,

a valve at the mouth of the feed-chute, and a rock-shaft connected therewith and adapted to be engaged by the cam, substantially. as
shown and described.
5. The combination, with the horizontal shaft, of the cam mounted thereon, the delivery or feeding wheel arranged upon said shaft and having a divided hub, the feed-chute connected with one of the sections, the valve at the mouth of the same, the rock-shaft connected to the valve, the slide-Valve, and strap connected therewith and engaging the cam, substantially as shown and described.
6. The combination, with the horizontal shaft carrying a cam, of the delivery or feeding wheel having a divided hub, the feed-chute, the valve and rock-shaft, the slide-valve and strap, the slide-plate, and pinion, all arranged substantially as shown and described.
7. The combination,with a hopper, of a revolving shaft journaled therein, the deliverychute, the cup-disk, and the adjustable disk having beveled projections to forni the bottom of the cups, said disks being mounted upon said shaft within the hopper, substantially as shown and described.
S. The combination, with a hopper and delivery-chute, of the cup-disk and shaft, the ratchet-wheel, the lever, the pitman connected thereto, and the operating and catch pawls,
all arranged substantially as shown and described.
9. The combination, with the shaft C and eccentric, of the lever having a finger and weighted arm, the pitlnan, the operating and catch pawl, the shaft G, the cup-disk, the ratchet-wheel, hopper, and delivery-chute, all arranged substantially as shown and described.
10. The combination, with ,the hopper, delivery-chute, and shaft, of the cup-disk, the ratchet-wheel and cam-disk, the pitrnau and operating and catch pawls, the .two-way Valve, the lever connected thereto, and the lever N3,
adapted to engage the cam-disk and operating the two -way valve, substantially as shown and described.
11. The combination, with the hopper, shaft, cup-disk, and delivery-chute, of the ratchet and cam disks, the pitman, operating and catch pawls, the two-way valve, the lever connected therewith, the lever N3, the arm O, and markerrod O, all arranged substantially as shown and described.
12. The combination, with a disk having a series of seed-cups formed thereon, of au adj ustable disk having a series of projections having beveled sides adapted to form the bottoms of the seed-cups, substantially as shown and described.
13. The combination, With the hopper-shaft carrying seededisks with cups and ratchetdisk, of the pawls and pitman, the lever hwaving a linger and weighted arm, the eccentric, the clutch, and lever for operating the same, substantially as shown and described.
14. The combination, with the hopper, of the shaft journaled therein, the check-row wheel mounted upon one end of saidshaft, the guide,` wheels arranged upon opposite sides of the check-rowwheel, and a rocking lever pivoted above the check-row wheel, said lever carrying a pawl adapted to engage the check-row wheel, the ends of said lever projecting over `the guide-wheels, substantially as and for the purpose described.
15. In a corn-planter, the combination, with a Jfeed-chute, of the reciprocating slide-valve arranged therein and having teeth upon its edge, the slide-plate arranged also within the chute and having teeth upon its edge, and a pinion arranged between the slidevalve and plate, substantially as and for the purpose described.
