ATTACHMENT FOR STRAW CARRIERS. No. 474,181. Patented May 3, 1892.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN MOQUILLAN, OF HECKER, ILLINOIS.
ATTACHMENT FOR STRAW-CARRIERS.
I SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 474,181, dated May 3, 1892. 7 Application filed November 14, 1891. Serial No. 411,908- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OHN MCQUILLAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hecker,
in the county of Monroe and State of Illinois,
have invented a new and useful Straw Carrier and Stacker Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to attachments for straw carriers and stackers; and it has for its object to provide an attachment adapted to be used in connection with the endless elevating-aprons of either a carrier or a stacker, and is designed to be used in connection with machines of this character which are provided with folding sections, so that when the stacker or the thrasher having a carrier is not in use the upper folding section of the apron-frame can be easily folded over and out of use without extra exertion, and also when designed to be used the said apron may be readily unfolded by means of this attachment.
With these and other objects in View, which will readily appear as the nature of theinvention is fully understood, the same consists in the novel attachment constructed, arranged, and combined as hereinafter fully described, illustrated, and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of the folding apron-frame of a straw carrier or stacker detached from the machine and provided with an attach- .ment constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional View of said apron-frame in its normal inclined position as in use. Fig. 3 is a similar View showing the upper section of the apron folded over the lower section. Fig. 4 is a detail in perspective of the lever.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A A represent the two hinged members of an ordinary endless-apron frame used in the straw-carrier attachment for thrashing-machines or upon the stacker itself, and is designed to accommodate the endless carrierapron B, traveling thereover and of the ordinary type. The under side of the upper section of said folding apron frame or table is provided with the sockets O, suitably secured to the under frame-work of the same and adapted to detachably receive the reduced shank D of the operating-lever E, that extends, whilethe folding frame is in its normal position, under Qthe lower section a suit able distance, according to the weight of the upper section and the amount of leverage required to fold the same over and upon the lower section.
It can be readily seen, when it is not desired to use the stacker or carrier, that by drawing downward on the handle portion of the operating'lever E the leverage thereof will cause the said upper section to turn over on its hinges and fall down upon the inclined lower section and out of the way, thus leaving the lever position over the top edges of both folded sections. An operating-rope F maybe secured to the outer end of said lever, so that when the same is in this elevated position bypulling down uponthe rope thesaid lever will be drawn downward, and
thus elevate the upper hinged member of the apron-frame and throw the same back into its normal inclined position in alignmentwith the lower section of the frame.
It can be readily seen that when the lever is not in use, if desired, the same can be read ily slipped from the receiving-sockets C and removed from the frame, or, on the other hand, quickly and easily replaced when necessary,
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I In an attachment for straw stackers and carriers, the combination, with the folding inclined endless-apron frame, of receivingsockets secured to the under side of the upper section, a lever having a reduced shank removably inserted in said sockets and an extended lever portion to obtain the requisite leverage, and an operating-rope secured to the outer end of said lever and by a downward pull upon the same adapted to throw the upper section or member of the apronframe over and upon the lower section and back into its normal inclined position in alignment with said lower section, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own-I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN MC UILLAN.
