J. DE MARS. SASH PASTENER.
Pauw
ATTORNEYS WITNESS/:"8:
UNITED STATESl PATENT OFFICEa JOSEPH DE MARS, OF ALBUQUERQUE, .TERRITORY OF ITEV MEXICO, ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO THE DE MARS SASH LOCK COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
SASH-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 463,494, dated November 1'?, 1891.
Application iledl'ebruary 18, 1 891. Serial No. 381,979. (No model.)
To caf/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH DE MARS, of Albuquerque, in the county of Bernalillo, New Mexico Territory, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sash-Locks, of which the following is a specification. My invention is an' improved sash-lock, being designed for locking both the upper and lower sashes; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will,be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a face view of a part of a window provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal and Fig. 4 is a transverse section of my sash-lock, and Fig. 5 shows t-he several parts thereof in detail.
The casingorsupport A is preferably formed of the top part or shell B, open at the bottom and provided in its sides with notches C and in its ends with notches D, and the bottom plate E tted to the open bottom of the shell and secured thereto by screws or in other suitable manner. This bottom plate is provided with short lugs C', which close the lower ends of the notches O, and with short lugs D', which close the lower ends of the notches D. These lugs O D serve efciently to keep the bolts, presently described, in position, and at the same time permit the said bolts to be easily placed in or. removed from the casing.
The shell B is arched up centrally between its ends at b to receive the bent or arched portion of the bolt F. This boltF is arranged lengthwise of the casing and is movable longitudinally therein, operating through the guide-notchesD at the ends of such casing. At about its middle the bolt F has a bent or arched portion Gr, which lits in a guideway b of shell B and operates to prevent the bolt F from turning. This portion Ghas at its rear side an almost straight wall or surface at g, which forms a bearing for the crank-arm of the cross-bolt. The actuating-spring H is arranged on the bolt F between the portion G and the casing, and serves to move the bolt F in opposition to the crank-arm of the cross bolt.
The cross-bolt I has a handle-knob i, is arranged transversely of the bolt F, and is movable both longitudinally and rotarily in lthe guides C. This bolt I is actuated by the spring h and has a crank-arm J, which operates in the arched portion G of bolt- F and engages the bearing g as the cross-bolt I is turned. The bolt I may be moved lengthwise out of engagement with the sash it locks and be turned to retract the bolt F. It will be noticed that the crank-arm J and bearing g are so formed that the crank-arm will properly engage and operate the bolt F whether the cross-bolt be shot or retracted.
In use the lock is secured upon the meeting-rail of the lower sash at the right-hand end thereof, with the bolt F arranged toengage in sockets or seats in the window-frame, and the cross-bolt is arranged to engage in sockets or seats in the upper sash. By this construction it will be seen that the lower sash may be locked closed or at any desired height, and such lower sash maybe locked to the upper sash, so that the two sashes may be held in any suitable position or entirely closed, as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is y l. Animproved sash-lock comprising a suitable casing or support and two bolts supported thereby and arranged transversely of and at right` angles to each other, one of such bolts being movable longitudinally and the other being movable both longitudinally and rotarily, and provided with means whereby its rotary movement may operate the rst bolt, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The im proved sash-lock herein described, consisting of the casing or support, the two bolts supported thereby, independent springs for operating the said bolts in one direction, one of said bolts being movable longitudinally and provided with a bearing and the other bolt being movable both longitudinally and rotarily and having a crank-like arm arranged to engage the bearing of the irst bolt, all substantially as set forth.
3. The improved sash-lock comprising the ling short lugs C C D D, fitted to said notches G D, the bolt F, held in notches D mid having :t bearing g :tud an actuatingsp1-i ng, and the o1'ossbolt I, having a, m'ztnkarm to engage the bem-ing g, and a spring for actuating the said bolt I, :LII substantially as set forth.
