l NITED STATE-S PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN B. DANJEAN, OF FOSTER, LOUISIANA.
PIPE-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 453,105, dated November 10, 1891.
Application filed April 4, 1891. Serial No. 387,649. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BERTRAND DAN- JEAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Foster, in the parish of St. Marys and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Pipe-Cutter; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable Others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to improvements in pipe-cutters, and the novelty will be fully understoodfrom the following description and claims when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of my improved implement. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of the same, the handle being in elevation. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the sliding jam removed. Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken in the plane indicated by the line a; a: on Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the cutting-die.
In the said drawings similar letters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, referring to which A indicates the stock of my improved implement, which is provided with a suitable This stock A, which is formed integral, comprises the main body portion b, the forwardly extending short branch 0, and the forwardly-extendin g branch d, which is provided at its end with an angular portion 6, having an angular inner side designed and adapted to bind upon a pipe during operation.
B indicates the sliding and gripping jaw or block of my improved cutter, which is provided with the vertically and rearwardly extending side flanges f, whereby it is guided within the branches 0 and d of the stock A. Taking through the center of the block B, which is provided with an angular bearingface g, is a forwardly and upwardly directed bore h, which is designed to sheathe the cutting-die presently to be explained. Taking transversely through theblock B, at a suitable elevation with respect to the bore h therein, is a rod 2', which is recessed at its middle within said bore h and is designed to form a stop to limit the inward or downward movement of the cutting-die.
The cutting-die O, which is approximately I of the proportional size illustrated, is of a general circular form in cross-section, but is provided with a flat upper side for the greater portion of its length, whereby'a shoulderj is formed adjacent to its forward end, which bearing against the transverse rod t' limits the inward or downward movement of the die. Extending forwardly from the forward end of the die 0 is the integral cutter 7a, which is preferably provided with an oblique edge, as illustrated.
As better illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, I form a vertical channel Z in the lower portion of the bearing-face of the block B and in alignment with the cutting-die, whereby the cuttings are conducted away from the die and prevented from interfering therewith. Taking centrally-through the body portion 1) of the stock A is a bore, as illustrated, which is screwthreaded for the upper or forward portion of its length and is designed to receive an adjusting-sleeve D, which is screw threaded for the greater portion of its length and is adapted to bear against and adjust the sliding jam or block B toward and from the bearing branch 6 of the stock, This sleeve D, which is provided with a milled head m,
is also provided with a screw-threaded bore and a slightly-enlarged bore adjacent its forward end.
E indicates the die-adjusting screw, which takes through the sleeve D and is provided with a milled head '11, whereby it may be turned to adjust the die 0 with respect to the jamor block B. I
By the construction described it will be seen that the sliding jaw or block may be readily adjusted by the threaded sleeve D, and
that the cutting-die may be readily adjusted independent of the sleeve D by the screw E, whereby said die may be fixed to out various depths. It will further be seen that by removing the die 0 the cutter is readily converted into an efficient and strong pipe-Wrench,
Although I have minutely specified the construction and arrangement of the several elements of my improved implement, I do not desire to be strictly confined to such construction, as it is obvious that such changes or modifications may be made as fully fall within the scope of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 15-
1. In a pipe-cutting implement, the combination, with the stock comprising the body portion having a threaded bore, the forwardlyextending short branch 0, and the forwardlyextending branch having an angular portion at its forward end, of a sliding jaw or block provided with a bore, a rod taking transversely through the block so as to intersect the bore thereof and having a recess within the bore, a cutting-die sheathed in the bore of the jaw or block and having a flat upper side and a shouldered end, a threaded screw taking through the threaded bore of the stock and having a threaded bore, and another screw taking through the bore of the firstnamed screw, substantially as specified.
2. In an implement of the character described, the combination, with the stock having a threaded bore in its body portion, the sliding jaw or block B, provided with a bore an d adapted to be moved in the stock, and the adjustable cutting-die sheathed in the bore of the said sliding jaw, of an internally and externally threaded sleeve taking through the threaded bore of the stock and adapted to bear against and adjust the sliding jaw, and a screw taking through the threadedbore of the-jaw-adjusting sleeve and adapted to bear against and adjust the cutting-die, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN B. DANJEAN.
