B. F.WISE. GARBAGE REGBPTAGLE. No. 463,019. Patented Nov.`10, 1891.
UNITED STATES BENJAMIN F. NVISE, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONF-HALF TO i PAT-ENT OFFICE.-
SIM. T. PRICE, OF SAME PLACE.
GARBAG E-RECEPTACLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 463,019, dated November 10, 1891.
l Application flled June 8, 1891. Serial No.395,418. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. IVISE, of the city of St. Louis an d State of Missouri, have invented cert-ain new and useful Improvements in Garbage-Receptacles, ofwhich the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to improvements in garbage-receptacles; and it consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts, as Will be more fully hereinafter described, and designated in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of my complete invention as applied to a fence. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same.
The object of my invention is to construct or provide a closed Vessel to receive garbage, such as kitchen refuse, ashes, stable and other sweepings, and to conveniently discharge the same through a partition wall or fence, and
is further adapted to accomplish this end with a relatively small hole or port through the fence, and to insure the closing of said hole or port at all times while the receptacle is in its normal position, and also keep said receptacle on the inside of the fence or wall, except when it is desired to discharge the garbage.
To these ends my invention consists in using a 4suitable receptacle of the construction as will be more fully hereinafter described, in combination with a suitable support for the same, such as a partition, a fence, a wall, or a door, provided with a port or opening through it, through which the receptacle may pass when in use.
cured to said door or lid 3 is a horizontal support 5, the same being supported by means of braces 6 ofthe construction as shown inv Fig. 2. Said brace 6 passes-over said horizontal support 5, and the ends thereof are secured to lid 3 in'any suitable and mechanical manner, preferably, however, as shown in the drawings.
7 indicates horizontal pieces, which are secured to lid 3 in any suitable and mechanical manner, the object of which is to prevent lid 3 from warping'. It may be observed in this connection that lid 3 and the parts and mechanism carried by the same are free to swing inwardly and outwardly, as desired, in a horizontal direction, and also that said lid is held in its closed or normal position by means of a spring-catch 8 of any suitable and mechanical construction.
9 indicates a spiral spring, or, rather, a torsion spiral spring, one end of which is secured to the fence l in any suitable and mechanical manner, and the other end thereof is likewise secured to lid 3. The function of said spring is to automatically close the lid 3 after the same has been opened, and always keep the lid in a closed position and. keep the receptacle for the garbage on the inside of the fence. I do not wish to limit myself to this specific device for automatically closing the lid or door 3.
lO indicates right-angular supports, guides, or braces, the function of which will be more fully hereinafter described, one end of the same being secured to the horizontal supporting-piece and the other end secured to braces 6 in any suitable and mechanical manner.
I will now proceed to describe the garbagereceptacle itself, which is indicated by the numeral 11. Said receptacle is of the construction as illustrated in Fig. 2, the open-end of the same being provided with a cap l2, secured to said receptacle, to which the lid 13, provided with a knob llt for manipulating the same, is hinged in any suitable and mechanical manner. Said receptacle is normally supported by the horizontal support 5.
l5 indicates handles of the construction as illustrated in Fig. l for manipulating the garbage-receptacle. The lower of said handles is adapted to fit in between the right-angular guides l0, and when so located prevents the receptacle from moving on its support.
16 indicates a ring, which is secured to lid 3 for opening the same whenever it is desired to discharge the garbage from the receptacle. Vthenever it is desired to discharge the garbage from the receptacle, it is only necessary for the garbage-collector to open the lid 3 outwardly in a horizontal direction, and then horizontal support, means for automatically closing said lid or door 3,V and means for locking the same, substantially as set forth,
2. The combination, With a fence or partition, of a door closing the same, a shelf projecting from the'inner side thereof, braces supporting the same, anda receptacle mounted yon said shelf, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with a fence or partition, of a door closing the same, a shelf projecting from the inner side thereof, a receptacle carried thereby, a spring to hold the door normally closed, and a securing device for said door, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
BENJAMIN F. WISE.
