XVILLIAM .I. BUCHANAN, OF HUNTINGTON, INDIANA.
DEVICE FOR PRINTING IN COLORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,461, dated September 29, 1891.
Application filed March 16, 1891. Serial No. 385,153. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
- Be it known that I, VVILLIAM J. BUCHANAN, of Huntington, in the county of Huntington and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Printing; in Colors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in devices for printing in colors; and it consists in a frame that is to be locked in the form combined with a tilting frame placed therein, and which is provided with apivoted lever at one end and carrying self-inking type at the other, a spring-actuated sliding supportingblock, and an operating-lever for moving the sliding block endwise, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to provide a means for printing an advertisement in color in a newspaper and which is to be locked in the form and brought into operation only when the printing-cylinder passes over it.
Figure 1 represents a perspective of a device which embodies my invention. Fig. 2 is a detached View of the tilting frame. Fig. 3 is a detail View showing the action of the inking-roller and the printing-cylinder upon the curved pivoted lever. Fig. 4 is a plan view of one end of my improved device. Fig. 5 is a sectional View on the line X X of Fig. 1.
A represents a rectangular frame of any desired length, Width, and depth, and which is locked in the form with the type in the de-' sired position. Placed in the bottom of this frame A is a bar or other suitable projection B, which serves as a pivot, upon which the pivoted type-frame C turns. This type-frame is preferably formed as shown, and has the self-inking type placed in its rear end, while in its front end is pivoted the curved lever D. The type are covered with a blanket F, of silk or other suitable material, which absorbs the colored ink from the reservoir beneath the type by means of wicks F, and is thus always kept moist. The rear end of the tilting frame is provided with projections G, as shown in Fig. 2, and placed in the lower rear end of the frame A is an endwise-sliding supportingblock H, which is provided with projections and recesses which correspond with those upon the end of the frame.
Secured to the end of the frame A is a spring I, of any suitable construction, and which spring exerts its power in moving the supporting-block H endwise when the block is left free to move by the raising of the rear end of the frame C.
The lever D, being pivoted at its center, has its ends alternately depressed when the inking-roller passes over it, as the inking-roller is not of sufficient diameter to bear upon both ends at once. When the printing-roller, which is of much larger diameter, passes over the lever D, it bears down upon both ends at the same time, and thus depresses the front end of the frame 0 before the type are brought into operation. As the front end of the tilting frame is depressed, the rear end is raised just above the supporting-block H, and then the spring I exerts its tension in forcing the supporting-block II endwise sufficiently far to bring its projections under the projections G of the rear end of the frame, so as to support it in a raised position while the printing-cylinder is passing over the type in the rear end of the frame. Pivoted upon theinner side of the end of the frameA is the lever O, the upper end of which projects above the top of the frame. The lower end of the lever engages the block 11, and as the upper end of the lever is depressed by the printing-cylinder its lower end moves the block endwise, thus allowing the frame 0 to drop to its normal position in the frame A. This rear end of the frame remains in a depressed position until the pivoted lever D is again operated,
when the rear end of the frame C, carrying the type, is raised into position, so as to print the advertisement in color.
By means of a device constructed as here shown and described advertisements may be published in newspapers in different colors, so as to render them more attractive and to make them more noticeable.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim 1. In a device for printing advertisements in color, a frame which is to be locked in the form, a pivoted frame placed therein, and a pivoted lever connected to the pivoted frame, combined with a movable support for supporting the rear end of the pivoted type-frame while the printing-cylinder is passing over it, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a device for printing in color, a frame which is to be locked in the form, a pivoted frame placed therein and in which pivoted frame the type are placed, and a curved pivoted lever connected to the pivoted frame, combined with a spring-actuated support for the rear end of the frame, and a lever that is operated by the printing-cylinder for moving the support endwise and allowing the rear end of the pivoted frame to drop, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a device of the character described, the outer frame, a pivoted frame within said outer frame and provided with type at one end, extensions G at the end of the inner frame, an endwise moving block provided with recesses in which the said extensions G fit, and a spring and a lever for operating the said block and the pivoted frame, the parts being combined to operate substantially as shown and described.
4. 111 a device of the character described, an outer frame, a second frame pivoted in said outer frame and which is provided with type at one end and a curved pivoted lever at its opposite end, the are formed by the said curved lever being of greater width than the diameter of the inking-roll, but of less width than the diameter of the cylinder, whereby both ends of the lever are engaged by the cylind er and the frame oscillated, the parts being combined to operate substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
XVILLIAM J. BUCHANAN.
