SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.`460,296, dated September 29, 1891. Apparition tied rebrntry 2o, 1891. serai No. 382,218. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM WAr11E,a citizen of the United States, residing at forcester, in the county of Vorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brooch or Lace- Pin Safety Attachments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which, in connection with the drawings making a part of this specification, will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same. 1
My invent-ion relates to a safety attachment designed to be combined and used with ladies brooches and lace-pins or other artic es.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive attachment to be readily combined with an ordinary brooch or lace-pin to prevent the same from dropping off and being lost in case the brooch or lacepin for any reason becomes detached from the dress or garment of the wearer.
My invention consists in the novel construction and combination of my safety attachment with a brooch or lace-pin, as will be hereinafter fully described.
Brooches and lace-pins are attached to the dress or garment of the wearer by means of a tongue pivoted at one end on the back of the brooch or lace-pin, with its other free end adapted to lit loosely and catch in an eye or loop on the back of the brooch or lace-pin. While wearing the pin, in case the free end of the tongue becomes disconnected from the eye or loop the weight of the pin will cause the tongue to straighten out and draw out of the garment or dress through which it is passed and allow the pin to drop oif, there being no means provided for securing the brooch or pin to the garment or dress of the wearer except the tongue above referred to. For the reason above stated valuable brooches and lace-pins are often lost.
In my present invention I provide a supplemental attachment to be connected with a brooch or lace-pin to prevent the same from dropping 0E in case the tongue of the brooch or pin becomes unfastened and disconnected from the garment or dress of the wearer.
My supplemental safety attachment consists of a Weight and a iiexible connection from said weight to the brooch or lace-pin or other article with which my safety attachment is combined. The weight and liexible connection forming my safety attachment is adapted to extend within the garment of the wearer of the brooch or lace-pin, and thus be entirely concealed from view.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l illustrates the manner of using my invention. Fig. 2 is a front view of a brooch or lace-pin with my safety attachment combined therewith; and Fig. 3 is a side view looking in the direction of arrow a, Fig. 2.
In the accompanying drawings, lis a brooch or lace-pin provided with a tongue 2 on the back thereof, pivoted at one end, and with its free end adapted to fit loosely into the eye or loop 3, as shown in Fig. 3, in the ordinary way.
Upon the upper part'of the brooch or lacepin il, above the tongue 2, is secured an eye or loop et. To said eye or loop 4 is attached the upper end of a small chain or cord 5. To the lower end of said chain or cord 5 is attached a piece of metal or other substance, forming a weight 6. The chain or cord 5 and weight C are made independently of the brooch or pin and attached thereto by means of the eye 4 or otherwise, which eye is preferably made on the upper part of the brooch orlacepin above the tongue-fastening.
The operation of my brooch or lace-pin safety attachment will be readily understood by those skilled in the art from the above description in connection with the drawings.
In attaching a brooch or lace-pin provided with my safety attachment to the garment or dress of the wearer the weight 6 and cord 5 are passed down within the garment or dress at the neck thereof, so as to extend down within the same, as shown by dotted lines, Fig. l, and thus be entirely concealed from view. In case the tongue 2, by which the pin is fastened to the dress or garment, becomes unt'astened, disconnecting the brooch or lacepin from the dress or garment, the same will be prevented from dropping' off bythe weight 6, attached to the end of the chain or cord 5 and extending within the dressl or garment,
ICO
as above stated. Said Weight 6 is made heavier than the brooch or lace-pin l, thus counterbalancing the Weight of the brooch or lacepin.
I have shown in the drawings and described lry safety attachment applied to brooches or lace-pins; but the same may be applied to-and used in connection With other 4forms of pins, studs, &c.
The advantages of my safety attachment for brooches, lace-pins, &c., will be readily appreciated by those skilled in the art.
I provide a safety attach ment of simple and inexpensive construction and readily combined With a brooch or other pin, Which willv prevent the brooch or pin from dropping off of the wearer in case the brooch or pin becomes unfastened and disconnected from the garment or dress of the wearer. I also provide a safety attachment which is entirely concealed from View When used, and which does not in any manner affect or alter the appearance of the brooch or lace-pin with which said safety attachment is combined,
tachment consisting of a chain or cord attached at its upper end to said brooch, and a weight attached to said chain or cord, said safety attachment adapted to extend within i the garment of the wearer and be entirely concealed from View, for the purpose stated, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, With a brooch, lacepin, or similar article, of the safety attachment consisting of a weight and a connection therefrom to the brooch, for the purpose stated, substantially as set forth.
WILLIAM WA'FTIE.
